The Quest Pro is CRAZY expensive! No sane gamer—who doesn’t make a living spouting opinions on YouTube—would ever consider it at that price point. This thing has “pro” in the title for a reason: it is largely intended for a professional and pro-sumer market which Meta is hoping will realize that VR is a bit like the IPAD. In the early days most people didn’t grasp the productivity potential the device brought to business. Now (in the case of the iPad) there are millions out there in the hands of workers. I personally don’t buy it. But I also thought the iPad was stupid: a giant iPhone for users too tech-frightened to use a laptop. I don’t believe Meta really intends for the Pro to be a consumer product. But it is a test bed for technology that can be ported to a consumer version of the Quest. They’ve bet the farm on VR. Meanwhile Institutional investors are running for the hills. My theory is that Meta will need to do something quickly to grow the market and therefore a Quest 3 is the only logical next step*.

I wasn’t aware of the price increase. Definitely have some inquiries coming in. Might have a buyer for the Q2 tomorrow morning … I have a feeling I’m going to make $1000 CAD this weekend.
I sold my older Quest 2 real quick$! No takers for my HP G2 yet. I asked the guy that bought my Quest 2 if he was interested in the HP G2 as well. He grinned and said, “No thanks”. I might keep it I guess. I checked to make sure my newer Quest 2 could run DCS over Virtual Desktop/Steam VR … looks beautiful!
Cool, I’ve got a committed buyer for my HP G2 tomorrow! Good money too! Hey, he’s getting the rev 2 cable, a mesh cable protector and a couple of nice cushioned face interfaces for his money as well!
It’ll be a bit sad to let it go but I wasn’t happy about that big cable hanging out the back of my head LOL! …
I’m thinking the quest pro, with its new optics are just a glimpse of how the quest 3 next year could be wonderful for DCS. Other than that, for that price I’d go Varjo…
Man I gotta look for one of those again - my G2 will only work in one slot and I discovered I had a Gen 1 cable. Gen 2’s were scarce last time I looked. It’s still works but it is ‘finicky’ about the port.
Same here. I needed a powered USB hub for the Gen 1 and had the sound issue as well (AMD chipset). Contacted HP, they had a Gen 2 cable in the mail that day and it was in our PO box within 48hrs… Then waited a week until the next trip into town to pick it up.
Interesting solutions there!
Swappable aspheric lenses… I wonder if they will offer prescription lenses for this. Batterypack in the neckstrap is not a bad idea. You need some counterweight there anyway.
What surprised me was the reduced FoV though. I thought Pimax would continue on their ultra wide path.
The promise of eye and handtracking sounds cool too.
Looking forward to the reviews of the consumer version, next year.
Yea…Swappable lenses are a neat feature…maybe in future they will offer Wider FOV lenses,This way the consumer could save substantially on buying a whole new HMD if they just want an upgrade on lenses.
Pimax has another headset in development called The 12k QLED that promises better clarity and Wider FOV than their current flagship 8kx,But I really don’t think we’ll see anything conclusive on that till well into 2023.
Looks like the Crystal doesn’t have the wide screens of the 8KX, so I doubt the lenses can do much about the FoV. I’m guessing they went for resolution and aspheric lenses in this one, to compete with Varjo. And when you’re pushing 40 pixels per degree, there is a limit how wide those screens can be… But if they have another headset in the pipeline, maybe that will continue the wide FoV tradition.
In the video he compares the Crystal FoV to the Index, so we’re still talking wider FoV than the Varjo Aero.
