The Aero is not using Windows Mixed Reality (WMR), it uses SteamVR and its own software stack. @Troll would be able to say conclusively, but I always thought it seems a good set-up software-wise (and hardware, it was more the price and that seems to be solving itself over time).
I like Norm’s stuff - he’s luckier in that he’s part of a bigger network (the Adam Savage thing) so I think it allows them just to say what they like a bit more without so much danger of being ignored by vendors.
Good thing. I was tempted originally but just didn’t think it would be 4X better than my G2 (it was/is 4X what I paid for the G2).
Hopefully I’ll be able to fly at night with these lenses/tech: the G2 isn’t great for mostly dark scenes; lights (on ships, streets, etc) are ugly. At least how I have to set it up.
Yeah, I hear him saying that… But cutting the price in half, like that…? Sounds a lot like price dumping to me.
No, it’s not WMR.
Varjo uses OpenVR(SteamVR) and OpenXR.
Me too. He’s a pro and knows his stuff as well as how to present it to the viewers.
He tested the 3D printer that I just got. I did watch a bunch of influencer vids about it, but his was the best.
Yeah, this stripper will tell me how she really feels about me…
Watched the Norm video and interesting stuff. If Norm did ‘Here’s a flight sim at night, let me look at the dials…’ seductive dance then I’d be throwing dollar bills like crazy. The glare of the Beyond does worry me a bit for sure, but the size and comfort look really nice. It’s good Barbie looks great, but what about a Bae 146 during dusk?
Reviewing it next to the Pimax Crystal seemed almost cruel, e.g.
Yeah, we need to get Norm hooked on flightsims.
Re OpenXR - does it mean that it can reproject from 30 (and 22,5) fps as well?
How is the quality of the reprojection?
Thanks
Didn’t realise that - thanks. It’s quite a while since I read the full low-down. I must admit it is very tempting, it’s just that there are some exciting things around the corner - and they may be expensive, but affordable. If I buy this, I can’t justify spending a similar amount again for a couple of years.
That was my justification for spending over £1k on Index (with a third station).
PS - Despite some agro about something I couldn’t be bothered to check a couple of years ago, Norm and his buddy (can’t remember his name) are guys I have always listened to and taken as credible references for headset info.
Something is Up in The World of VR…Competition is getting Fierce!!!
Pimax Offers up to $800 back on trade in Program
finally some money dance. once VR headsets will be down below 300€ [including VAT] ( as promised long time ago ) then let me know
The Varjo terminology is Vertical Synchronization of 45 and 30 FPS. You can then use Motion Smoothing, which is the reprojection in the Varjo world. I think 45 with smoothing works very well. I can only compare to what I remember from the G2 and I think the Varjo solution is better. But bear in mind that I’m comparing the G2 from at least 2 years ago, and the Varjo of today. I have upgraded the PC hardware since then and for all I know, the G2 reprojection may have evolved as well.
I haven’t used the 30 FPS synchronization that much.
This is one thing that really frustrates me. It seems selling stuff is a lot easier in the US and maybe here in the UK in cities and large towns, but here in the sticks I always struggle to sell anything - even at rock bottom prices.
I would love to sell previous headsets and that would mean the Aero would be a cert, cos the headsets I would sell (in that case Quest 2 and Index) would easily take up most of the cost. I already tried to sell the Quest 2 - with loads of extras - for a measly price and didn’t get a single enquiry - though not on ebay as it’s too easy to get done over on that. As in untrustworthy buyers who already have the upper hand in disputes.
I did manage to sell my original Quest locally, but things have changed since and people are watching their pennies, too.
I turned reprojection off in the G2 a little ways back; kinda ugly (not sure what happened; used to be better).
Last few flights In DCS it ran well enough not to need repro?! Cool, cus it was really distracting at night; vertigo is fun (when you’re not really gonna die) but vertigo + squiggly things crawling inside your headset was annoying.
Some seemingly suspicious rumours about Pico 5 resolution has it:
Pico5 2560x2560, Pico 5 Pro 2560x2560 and Pico Max 3840x3840 + display port
I’d happily buy another Pico headset, as long as they don’t reduce the FOV. I think they did a great job overall with the Pico 4, and at that price point.
I’d pay more for better specs from them without hesitation - just as long as the price doesn’t go too high.
What numbers…
I run my G2 supersampled to 4000x4000 so I wonder how would that look in the Pico Max
Not sure anyone posted this here, but Helisimmer has a review of the Varjo Aero and it has comparisons to the HP Reverb G2. He has a similar graphics card to what i have, and his view makes an upgrade tempting. Base stations though. I don’t wanna purchase 'em
And now I find myself suddenly sitting on a fence that I didn’t know existed before.
So what you thinking @Fridge? Bigscreen for the super light googles but a risk of glare flying at night, or the Aero with price drop for the nice build quality/resolution but perhaps a limited vertical FOV? I’m sort of not counting the Crystal as think it looks pretty huge.
