VTOL VR

Officially not really, there are some decent YouTube tutorials, and here’s the link for all the various “NATOPS.” Ironically I don’t think there’s a manual for the titular AV-42.

F/A-26B “Wasp” Manual - Google Docs

F-45A “Ghost” Manual - Google Docs

EF-24G Manual - Google Docs

AH-94 “Dragonfly” Manual - Google Docs

T-55 “Tyro” Manual - Google Docs

Far as tutorials the most inclusive series, but a bit dated is: (1) VTOL VR Tutorials - YouTube

I didn’t however see anything that had changed since the tutorials series was made. Here is specifically the GPS guided munitions: VTOL VR Tutorial Nuggets: GPS Bombs (GBU-38 and GBU-39) (youtube.com)

Thanks @jenrick!
I will have a look at the manuals. VTOL VR is mostly intuitive, but there are some ”traps” that prevents me from understanding the workflow…

Some quick screen grabs from my mission with @paulrix yesterday. Unfortunately, the S-CAM only captures me and my surroundings…I’m not sure if there is a setting that travels around to allies and enemies…I’ll have to mess around. But to fill in the gap…just imagine @paulrix blasting around in an F-35-ish looking aircraft with enemy aircraft plunging from the skies all around him. Thankfully…because my forte in air-to-air is rapidly disassembling my aircraft by running my steed into enemy missiles. Uh…taking one (or three) for the team…yeah…right…

Quick product plug - VTOL VR is on sale now (30% off ~ $21US) - if you have a VR headset…go buy it. It is insanely fun and such an amazing VR experience…and is one of the best combat flight sims…or any flight sim…ever.

So Paul and I were flying Mission 1 of the Battle of Taiwan user created campaign:

The briefing is very good. Basically we will be pushing into the south end of the island and supporting advancing tanks along a valley road to Kachsiung. The targets and enemy disposition are really nice…lending to a lot of work but in an approachable way. Paul was flying the awesome F-45A and I was mostly hauling A2G stores because…well…the aforementioned terribleness at all things A2A…

TAIWAN-00

Going through the short pre-flight routine. It is very quick and with practice you can be airborne in 60 seconds or so:

Battery
APU
MFDs (NAV left / radar or TGP right) RWR on / fuel page on / HUD on / HMCS on
Engine 1 / 2 on
APU off
Flaps 1
Wing unfold
Launch bar extend
Wheel brake off
Taxi to the catapult, hook up, CATO trim switch engage
Engage burner
Hands on left and right canopy rail handholds - and off you go!

The fun and I’d say most immersive feature of VTOL VR is that all of the above happen with your hands and fingers moving all over the cockpit. It feels VERY much like being in a real airplane. I love me some DCS…but the speed and positive feedback that VTOL VR gives just sort of sets the scene.

The first few sorties are spent degrading the enemy radar networks…killing long-range SAM sites and radars. That doesn’t mean you are home free as there are shorter range radar guided AA sites, IR MANPADS, IR and radar vehicles, etc…

Meanwhile Paul was clearing the area of A2A threats and then he switched to the A2G role. From what I barely remember about the F-45A and the helmet mounted cueing system…it is sort of a theater battlespace studio (put that in your brochure!). He can see where my sensors are pointing, what missiles are tracking me, where all the threats are. He is almost like a mini AWACS with teeth. It is a very cool airplane and I’d love to do a deep-dive on it sometime.

Coming back to the carrier to rearm and refuel…and repair damage…

The mission has several phases…protect an advancing convoy from an ambush…then clear out the path ahead to the city and airfield. All unfolds really naturally and not with undue pressure. The A2A threat is just balanced enough.

Here I am marking a factory with my targeting pod (TGP) and sending the GPS coordinates to a GPS target list on the left MFD. Once I’ve built my list from afar using my TGP, I can make a single pass with standoff weapons. Just hold the trigger down and the weapons release in sequence on each target in the list. Again, it is the button pushing while flying and evading that really make this sim shine.

TGP pointing at a tank depot in the center of the city. It was interesting because you had to find angles to release weapons so that they wouldn’t impact skyscrapers surrounding the targets.

I was carrying a combo load of 8 JDAMs and 9 GBU-39 small diameter bombs. I would populate a target list with between 2 and 6 targets when possible…

The physicality of flying VTOL VR is really awesome. The 1:1 head movement has you turning in your chair and craning your neck. 2D and TrackIR is awesome…don’t get me wrong…but something about 1:1 VR really hits right for me. After a couple of hours…you do come away a bit worn out…in a good way…

My F/A-26B bomb truck… GBU-38s, GBU-39s, HARMs, Mavericks, AMRAAMs…

Getting ready to launch again…

Did you feel something??

Awesome time was had. I think that mission took us about 1+40 roughly. Nice to actually complete one for once. There are slots for helicopters and I think the new EF-24G… Looking forward to the next mission!

Been working on my EWO skills off line I might be mildly useful in tht EF-24 if the timing works out. Better question is how’s the air field situation? My carrier take offs are great, my landings…

 Well…your carrier landings are probably better than my dogfighting skills…so that’s fair…!

We could use a good EWO… I think @PaulRix has been experimenting with it a bit. I know absolutely nothing about the EW capabilities of the aircraft. It would be nice to be able to jam the enemy to allow our guys to get a bit closer for AMRAAM shots. I have such a low percentage of success with my long AMRAAM shots…like 1 in 10 seem to connect. I’m trying to fire near the top of the DLZ to give it at least a chance…but they spoof me nearly every time and send one flying my way. I’m terrible at evading missiles.

I think Mission 2 might have an airfield for a base possibly…I’m not sure. If we get together we will post here…it is kind of random based on all our time zones and flying and work schedules. Sometimes a spur of the moment type thing. I might be around later today if the soccer matches get cancelled…it is pouring here in the Carolinas…

Assuming the wife doesn’t have other plans for me, later afternoon or evening might be an option.

From what I’ve read here I need to setup windows voice recognition for comms in game?

This one seems to be hit or miss. I had problems with it…but many people just get in and it seems to work. There is a switch in the cockpit to enable voice communications. You can also go in to the settings in VTOL VR and test your mic by saying those sayings and they turn green if your mic is working. There does seem to be success with making sure that VTOL VR on the 2D monitor is the “focus” window…so basically peek under your headset and click your mouse on the VTOL VR screen on your desktop to ensure that that is the focused window. As far as I know there is no text/typing chat in VTOL VR…

It was a fun mission. If the F35 is anything remotely close to the fictional F45, then all the criticisms about it being a lemon are totally unfounded. In the game the F45 isn’t the fastest and it doesn’t carry the weapons load that the F26 can… but it doesn’t have to. The large Tactical Situation Display gives you an easy to interpret big picture of the ‘battle space’. You can designate targets directly from this display. It is limited by what your sensors have detected as well as what your friends and allies pick up.

My luck with air to air can be put down to being able to lob AMRAAMs without first locking up the target with radar… they just fly to the estimated/anticipated location of the the enemy aircraft and go ‘Pitbull’. You don’t always hit of course. When you get in close you can fire your sort range missiles off axis using the helmet sight.

My experience with the EF24 suggests that I have a lot to learn. I have learned that jamming isn’t a silver bullet… it lets you get closer before the enemy site can launch on you…but you still have to keep your distance. Once they do fire, you now have the problem that you are well within the missile’s no escape zone.

I wish I could fly with you all today…but I have to go fly a Challenger.

Dynamic Greek Isles Liberation is up:

@Troll and I chatting in the briefing room after liberating a few islands. Dinner bell rang and we had to hang it up but it was really fun! I’ll post screens later…

I think the briefing room is one of the coolest things about the game…the height relief map with realtime battle info is nifty. I can only assume that active targets located or being data linked by BLUE or RED are viewable by each side…but not both sides (if you are playing Blue vs. Red)…

Hey…I became an Ace in six seconds…!! That is what happens when you crest the ridge at the enemy airport and there is queue of aircraft waiting to takeoff. A little spray of BRRRRTTTTT down the line of them. Followed quickly by a rapid airframe disassembly by radar AA…

Is this still VR controllers only? Or can you steer with a HOTAS?

I wonder if one can walk around the map, if the playspace is large enough?

yelling the lord of the rings GIF

Too stupid for “smart” weapons…

Troll: So, I select the TGP and PWR, right?
Beach: Yeah.
Troll: I get No Signal
Beach: Did you load a Target Pod?
Troll:……
Troll: I’ll just use the Mk. 83’s.

AFAIK, yes. You can use hardware rudderpedals though.
But using the VR controllers is a large part of what makes this game so cool.

Is it the Marines that like to eat crayons @Deacon211 ? Yeah…maybe you can be a Marine pilot… I’m probably more qualified to mow the lawn outside base OPs…

I think I’ve seen people do that…you can also walk around the weapons bay hangar…

Good tip for you egg-beater drivers (I don’t know much about it yet)…

You don’t have to turn your engines off in the AH-94

  • Weapons Master - SAFE

  • Throttles - IDLE

  • Rotor Brake - ON

  • COM MENU to request rearm/refuel

Ooooh… Need to learn the AH-94!

Only the ones that taste like victory.
