VTOL VR

VTOL VR is 25% off during the Steam Summer Sale. Best money I’ve ever spent on a game/sim.

Nice video Chris! The EF24 is a neat bird. Fast too!

The jammers are pods that you have to assign to a hard point. For the EW side of things, you will definitely benefit from having a RIO/WSO who can focus just on that.

I still prefer sneaking around in my F45  .

@BeachAV8R “Uh that’s not as big as I thought it would be.”

If I had a nickel…

I’ve spent an hour in the AH-6. That followed at least an equal amount of time figuring out how to find it, install it and get scenarios which utilize it. Hint: requires a separate Steam app called something like VTOLVR Mod Installer. I believe the installer must always be used to launch VTOL in order to see any unofficial mods. And of course, as has been mentioned already, the AH-6 requires the AH-94.

I was expecting a Vietnam-era loach. It’s more like a ball-sight carrying Kiowa in functionality. Which actually makes it more fun within the modern rich-but-simplified conceit that makes VTOL great. We have some of the same sensors as the official vehicles but we must employ them without a helmet or a hud. TOW missiles are laser seeking, not wire guided. How? Why? I don’t know! It’s best not to ask questions. Just enjoy the satisfaction of finally have sidewinding Vikrhs in VTOL!

As a rated commercial helicopter pilot with 70+ hours of hard Robinson time plus two in an Agusta flying a super-model to NYC(!), I felt that SAS was a crutch for lesser sorts. Let’s turn that off and…crash. Let’s turn that back on and fly. It’s fun! I’d say that it falls well short of Cowan’s -500E in X-Plane and MSFS. (No surprise). Maybe even a touch shy of the DCS Loach. (Again no surprise). But it seems to follow plausible-ish physics and is pretty nimble. In a world with poor cover and a plethora of near-future vehicles like the AH-94, it’s hard for me to see where this thing fits in the battle-space. But it’s light, low-tech and fun (and free) and worth every minute of old-man-makes-monkey-noises-at-PC syndrome trying to get it installed.

Imagine pairing it with an OV-10 bronco mod for low-intensity COIN ops.

I like the way you think sir!

My lifelong love-affair with the OV-10 sprang from an introduction as an Operation Flashpoint addon. Seemed way more fun than the vanilla A-10 in that game, and is just one of those aircraft that ‘makes sense’. It’s a shame that none of the attempts at a resurrection have panned-out in the real world.

If I were king, we would have ordered the OV-10X as a light attack aircraft, given them to SOCOM, and incorporated them into existing USMC AH-1 squadrons at the MEU level, with the ability to detach and forward-deploy whenever necessary.

Produce and sell them to our allies (Philippines, Thailand, places that need modern COIN aircraft) and no one would have ever heard of an armed Super Tucano or AT-6.

When you are low and relatively slow, there is something to be said for bringing a spare engine with you, especially when someone is likely to be shooting at you.

I’m going to take another crack at getting the game to work with my headset. It loads well, but I am unable to access some controls. I think the issue might lie in properly defining boundaries. Sadly, I won’t be able to attempt a fix until after August because I’m currently sitting a dog that suffered some trauma. Hats and my headset make him freak out.
