What are you reading right now

Oh hell yeah! I had a brief chat on Twitter with Mr. Scalzi- some years ago- about Love + Death + Robots episodes!
Brilliant!

Starter Villain is in my Backlog too…

Sea Stories by Admiral (retired) William McCraven. He had a very interesting career.

Finished reading the expanse series. Wow! I really wish they could have done three more seasons and finished it… Would have been nice to see Bobby and Clarissa/Peaches as part of the crew of the Roci, among other things.

For those that wached the show, but don’t have any intention of reading the books. The series ends with what is covered in the novella Strange Dogs, that ocuurs between Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising - Books 6 & 7. When I first watched it, Spoilers for those who want to read the books but haven’t yet.

I thought that they were animals that had been infected by the protomolecule. They aren’t. They are repair drones that were just following their programming which is why they brought the bird thing and children ‘back to life’. The resurrected brother and sister are crucial to how the story pans out.

Re-reading Iain M banks Culture series.

Starting with one of what I remember being my favourites, Look to Windward

Damn, I forgotten how well written they are. If you like philosophy masquerading as sci-fi then these are the books for you.

Finished Android’s Dream and it was really good.
You notice it’s one of his earlier books, not in a bad way mind you- it just hits you differently.
VERY enjoyable and again, with that 80s/90s Sci-Fi movies vibe.
8+/10

Taking a hiatus from his writing as I am now reading a book my brother wrote (sadly only available in italian) and despite being his first book it’s a very enjoable experience.

Re-reading “Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the cockpit” by Lt. Col. Mark Hasara. Five chapters in, just as good as I remember.

Mickey 7 (the book that the about to be released movie Mickey 17 is based on).

Like all good sci-fi it is a study of the human condition, in this case the themes of identity and prejudice… rather than pew pew laser space battles.

If you like the work of John Scalzi, particularly the likable smartass as protagonist, you will like this (tagging you @komemiute because I know you do).

“Emma”. Not ashamed to admit being a Jane Austen fan.

Not ashamed to admit to reading it as well and although my reasons were less than gentlemanly or noble, I did end up liking it… I have also read Pride and Prejudice, although many years later.

My wife found this at a used book store yesterday:

I read John Parker’s The Gurkhas years ago but this is the first book I have read about them written by an actual Gurkha. They are hands down the toughest (and scariest) solders I have ever been in the field with… even if it was just an Exercise.

Adrian Tchaikovsky - Dogs of War

@smokinhole You would like this Eric.

Edit: Finished it. I love the way he continues to ask those big existential questions with what are on the surface simple stories. Because Rex has done terrible things, but he just wants to be a good dog!

If said dogs are sentient, I’m on it!

Yes they are. As well as Dragon, Bees and Honey (a bear) who is the the smartest of them all.

Those Tschaikovski books with the sentient spiders are really awesome as well.

Yep. Children of Time was mindblowing.

@Harry_Bumcrack a recommendation for you is the commonwealth series by Peter F Hamilton. My favourite book series ever.
Start with Pandoras star and judas unchained, then move onto the Void saga.

I have read the first 3 books 3 or 4 times each. Absolutely love them

I have read a lot of Hamilton’s books  Mindstar Rising, Nano Flower, Pandoras Star and Judas Unchained… Didn’t realise there was a third book.

Most recent one I have read, and I am literally looking at it on my bookshelf now, is Fallen Dragon.

Have I mentioned that I am a total sci-fi nerd?

If you like Hamilton, I reckon you would also like Alastair Reynolds: His Revelation Space series is really good.

Thats one of my favourites. A wonderful book. Incredibly well written. As a standalone book, it’s probably his best work

The void series, continues on from judas unchained. The dreaming void, temporal void and the evolutionary void are just magical.

Then the sheldon void series again, continues the commonwealth saga.

The only series i didnt really like was the reality disfunction series. All the al capone stuff wasnt my thing.

But the commonwealth series is the absolute best.

The salvation series is amazing as well. Absolutely mind blowing.
