Really enjoy it
I have added that to my wishlist. Now I just have to get through Brin’s Uplift series first… I got the first three novels as a compendium, a bit over 3000 pages. it is going to take a while.
I think I am enjoying the Mi-24 a bit too much in DCS
Bit of palette cleanser after reading a lot of sci-fi/fantasy this past year.
On a recommendation from Greg of Reflected Simulations fame. It’s an extraordinary read, as I’m finding that most of the Mossie books are.
I’m reading this one right now as well. A really great read.
I can only hope I am as mentally sharp at the grand old age of 105…
I just finished this on audiobook, thanks for the recommendation @chipwich And @PaulRix, Colin Bell comes across as such a nice man. Listening to it felt like someone’s Grandad telling you stories. Some funny, some sad but with such humility, detail and bravery. Definitely recommended. 105 years old, just incredible.
I didn’t realize that he narrated the audio version himself until reading your post. I just went back and upgraded my Kindle text only version.
I’m really looking forward to Reflected’s new Mossie campaign, for which he has offloaded much of the tedious tasks to an “AI” navigator. We all know how detailed and realistic he makes his campaigns, to the point of task saturation for someone not actually trained by the RAF!
Ah… he doesn’t narrate. Though his genuineness (is that a word) comes through in his prose. He does have a bit of narration at the end of the book, which is similar to the interview you posted.
The audiobook didn’t disappoint and is one which I know I’ll listen to again.
If anybody’s looking for F-100 related reads, I’m about to start rereading this one. Mark Barent was a Misty FAC pilot during Vietnam, and spins a good, intricate yarn about the middle years of the war.
Rolling Thunder by Mark Berent
I really liked the narration during air combat in this one.
Reading Kemp now and I find a lot of his basic theses resonate with my prior beliefs on human nature. I like to think the end of our current capitalist-industrialist hellscape might be more woodstock than Mad Max.
Making my way through the Kilo-Five triology of the Halo novels. Really been enjoying those books for the past 2 years and have almost finished the collection I bought from someone online.
I do feel overwhelmed with a massive amount of useless lore now though, anyone want to hear about how hot the San’Shyuum were? Yes, the prophets were so attractive everyone wished to fornicate with them. Greg Bear wrote this. It’s canon.
Anyway, the pallate cleanser will be a book about the WWII with maps, got it on holiday so it will also serve as a lovely memory.
Do yourself a favour and don’t start on the WH40K books then… ![]()
I love 40K lore but I do not have time to read that many books… Just need to read more about how the Sangheili raise their offspring.
Yeah, there are like 30 books just for the Horus Heresy alone. And that is technically 30K… ![]()
The whole series is pretty well written. Mark Berent really puts you in the cockpit along with his main characters, whether it is in the F-100 or Bird Dog in the first book or the F4 as the series progresses.
