I remember when the Dusty version was getting air time, having not seen the Thomas Crown Affair yet, but assumed that it was referring to recreational drug use, since that was very much the social activity of the time. Not that I was old enough to engage in those activities, but assumed that it was another song about getting “turned on”. A sultry voice hers.
Speaking of Dusty Springfield and the Beatles, here is an interesting video clip of them all together. The interview she does is quite funny.
Since we’re going old school here, how about a little Petula Clark? Good memories and visions of A-6 Intruders and a couple guys named Jake “Cool Hand” Grafton and Virgil “Tiger” Cole.
Both my kids are big fans of Sabrina Carpenter for home dance parties, and we’ve played this Tiny Desk several times for them:
Love that album. In fact both albums after the departure of Waters were great.
There’s good reason The Mountain Goats instantly sell out any time they’re playing here (in their hometown):
Great song about John’s disillusionment with his marriage to Cynthia.
Yeah, that was one of the things it was about.
Thankfully I don’t share those feelings, but the feeling of being tired to the bone is what the song conveys so well.
I am not the biggest fan of John in particular, but he was a master of conveying feelings with very few words and a bit of melody.
To be honest, I don’t know if John or Cynthia would care if you didn’t share his feelings about their marriage.
Another thing about John was he wasn’t great about thinking before speaking. He had no filter, as people would say today. In an instantaneous moment, he would say or write something as if it’s what he always feels or thinks, then a day later have moved on.
Obviously he wouldn’t have divorced her had he not had issues with the marriage he was pushed into, because of Julian, that he never wanted.
I meant I don’t share those feelings about my own marriage.
But yeah, John was certainly a special character, and not always easy to deal with. IIRC he was already in close contact with Yoko back then, making him feel even worse about his not too happy current marriage.
I’m on my own, working in a cold and noisy computer room and I catch up via Spotify albums I never listened to and of artists I only passed by briefly.
Today I’m awestruck by the Incubus album “Morning View”.
There’s A LOT to unfold there and I am impressed. Obviously it was written by someone done with wrong relationships and wanting a new start.
I love it.
I actually could say I adore it.
It mirrors my current life events, with the divorce and my current problems.
But there’s also hope and need for love…
And I can’t stop to draw a parallel to my current girlfriend and hopefully partner for life.
I don’t have a link to it now but I needed to share.
Incubus are great still. Amazing craftsmanship in their music.
And the drummer is underrated to say the least.
This week I need strength. Good thing I literally just discovered Run The Jewels.
Have created this playlist- with their album in this (apparently) order of greatness.

First album
Man I wish the live audio on Kendrick’s mic had been a bit better…but that was an epic halftime show. I know it totally went over a LOT of heads. The all-black cast (a rage baiting comment on the destruction of DEI)…the weaving of red, white, and blue throughout, the implication that the message was actually not about Drake (though he catches some strays too ) and Samuel Jackson’s Uncle “Sam” (Tom) portrayal was…chef’s kiss.
And I liked Kendrick’s jeans.
The dude is so creative with the layering of his messages.
Time got some of it right…but missed a few other moments…sometimes the messages were just in the layout and presentation of the dancers. But it is a good summary…
Personally, I’m politics fatigued and would have preferred to keep it out of the game. My wife and kids didn’t grasp Jackson’s satirical message, but one of my 11 year old daughters knew a couple of the songs’ lyrics and was singing along word for word. Which I guess proves that she’s once more figured out a way to subvert parental controls. I give up
Politics should be out of sporting events and awards shows period. It’s hence why I totally ignore both now.
As I told a friend this morning, somebody could write a masters thesis based purely on the visual and lyrical symbolism of that show, and still have things left over. There’s a reason he’s won a Pullitzer prize and as many Grammies as he has.
That Gil Scott Heron callback was spot on: “the revolution IS about to be televised. You picked the right time, but the wrong guy.”
Masterful.
I don’t disagree on the talent behind that and his lyrics, I just don’t like the “music.” Turn all music into just poetry recitals and his are definitely some of the best. It’s not just poetry, though.
Really good music will make even crappy lyrics forgivable, while lackluster music damns even the finest prose.
