Oh, great one! I think this is the only song in existence that mentions Raleigh by name (TWICE even), and in a lot of ways they’re hometown favorites here in North Carolina. @Mudcat and I were talking about Merlefest, an annual music festival here in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, the hometown of local blues, bluegrass, and folk music legend Doc Watson (the music festival is named after his prematurely deceased son Merle). I mention this because Doc Watson discovered OCMS when they were living just outside of Boone, NC (home of Appalachian State University), and helped popularize them. So this one is close to my heart.

I saw OCMS at Merlefest in probably 2013- great show! MUCH better than Dwight Yoakam, who was supposedly the big headliner the next day.

Merlefest…
… I’ll just quote myself from above:

Anyway, OCMS have some interesting songs. This one is really strange but it happens to be one of my favourites by them:

…and yes I realize it is yet another song about taking drugs…

These guys also play here a lot.

You just need to bite the bullet, come spend a few weeks in the Carolinas, see the North Carolina and Yorktown and Wright Memorial, and hang out with me, Piper, Mudcat, Beach, 531 Ghost, and all the rest. And get all the Americana music and proper pork barbecue you can. And maybe if you’re lucky, some minor-league baseball or college basketball.

Oh and btw, It isn’t. I know at least one other song that does. This gem by good old Chuck Berry:

Oh good call.

Better than my hometown. We got mentioned in an amazingly beautiful, hauntingly sad song about abortion:

I guess we got a band too. Apparently Nazareth (the band) took their name from the first line of that song. I did not know that till a minute ago, yay!

Fun fact:
Steppenwolf was named after a novel by Herrmann Hesse, an author who was born only a few km from where I live.

Have you read that? Weird book that. Good, but weird. I should reread it, see if I can make more sense of it now that I’m older.

Yeah, I read three novels by Hesse:

  • Siddhartha
  • Unterm Rad (Beneath the Wheel)
  • Der Steppenwolf

So, since we’re not going to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day like we normally would expect to, here’s a link to Dropkick Murphys streaming a show tomorrow at 1900 EDT. If you’ve never seen them I highly recommend it- they put on a great show.

Random selection of songs to pass the time. (Spotify’s definition of what I can’t get enough of and my definition vary greatly)

The movie that sold a million choppers.
