There is no way to accurately describe how HUGE this song/movement was when it came out in 1978. It was EVERYWHERE!!

Just discovered this:

It’s on HBO in eps of ten minutes, and there’s a lot of it and it’s hilarious and brutal and very metal. Go forth and die!

Going to college in Miami and opting to go diving and fishing in the Keys instead of joining a fraternity, Buffett wrote the soundtrack of my 20s in those first four seven albums. It was a hell of a good time, but eventually I decided to move north before it killed me. Err, make a change in latitude.

Buffett hung the moon, not only in music, but in lifestyle and attitude for millions of people. 76 seems a bit earlier than I would chose to check out, so maybe their was a negative side-effect of having such a positive approach to life. But I imagine that he had a pragmatic side as well, given his success in most ventures and activities that he attempted, including becoming a pilot.

Speaking of questionable habits, back in my early 40s, when I was winding down my skydiving years, I was at a drop zone in Monroe, GA. My brother and I were admiring a Lake amphibian, when the owner arrived. We struck up a conversation with the pilot about skydiving and his unique aircraft, during which time my brother introduced him as Bill Booth, whom I knew by name - most skydivers would have - because he invented the 3-ring quick release system of attaching risers to parachute containers. During the conversation, I noticed that the CD player Booth had loosely mounted between the seats had a Jimmy Buffett disk in it. We complemented him on his music choice for Lake piloting, be it in the air or on sea.

Booth went on to recount meeting Buffett while having his Lake serviced in Kissimmee, Fl. There, he met another Lake owner and the two decided to go grab a bite while their planes were being worked on. Over lunch they eventually got around to the “what do you do” question, to which Buffett casually mentioned that he was a musician and song writer. Booth said that at the time he was oblivious to the music that made drinking Margaritas in Key West a much desirable pastime. They were just a couple of guys having lunch shooting the bull about how much they loved their aircraft. I don’t remember if Booth said that they remained in touch or if he ran in to him later on. But he did grow to enjoy Buffett’s music and it became a permanent part of operating the Lake. Buffett would eventually outgrow the Lake and upgrade to a Grumman Albatross. What he would haul in it will probably remain open for debate as long as Parrotheads exist.

I lived in south Florida during the 80’s. Buffett was a religion there, and it was wonderful.

My first Buffett show was at the Sunrise Musical Theatre. Small venue, couple hundred seats. My wife bought us tickets for my birthday while she was 8 months pregnant with our first kid. Curtains opened up and there’s Jimmy sitting in a chase lounge with a wooden guitar with a bucket of beer next to him. For three hours he drank, told great stories, and played great music. I was hooked.

I saw Weird Al and Elton John at Sunrise Musical Theater.

Not together. Two separate occasions.
Both in the 90s. I moved away from there over 20 years ago.

I know there are several fans of Leo’s here, so I’ll drop this off here.

I used to listened to their Royal Albert Hall Concert all the time 11-12 years ago (have the CD somewhere) and just stumbled across it on my YouTube feed. Still just as good as I remember :love_you_gesture:

Oft considered a granny’s guy and much maligned by the hip crowd, some of his songs weren’t half listenable and even singable, too.

RIP Roger Whittaker
