Here are a few lads from Liverpool. The old people among us here might remember them.
Joke aside, I am currently working through their whole discography (bought a CD box, which in 2024 probably means that I am getting long in the tooth myselfâŠ) and there are some songs in there that I hadnât known previously and/or didnât give enough attention to. Some real gems in there.
Below is one of them. Enjoy, my friends!
Ainât gonna be everyoneâs style here (or anyoneâsâŠhahaâŠ) but I heard the hook for this last week on a video short with some kitesurfing and looked into the song⊠I love itâŠand the video is mesmerizingâŠ
For years I thought that song was about an 18th or 19th century ship wreck. The thought that a modern ship could go down on one of the great lakes during my lifetime never crossed my mind.
Wheels
Yeah, I bought those CDs in 1987. And again in 2009. Twice, mono and stereo. Also bought the Capitol US albums a few years before that, and then again several years ago.
Also have the super deluxe Editions of Revolver, Sgt Pepper, The Beatles (aka white album), Let It Be/Get Back, and Abbey Road.
Then thereâs the Anthologies, the Live at the BBC pair, stripped-down Let it Be-Naked, 1, and the recent 62-66 and 67-70 rereleases.
Iâm a slight fan.
I kind of grew up with the records (my parents are fans) but mostly listened to the well-known songs, and my parentsâ collection is on vinyl and far from complete.
I also have to add that back then as a kid many songs just didnât work for me, because they were âweirdâ (something I enjoy now) and/or because I didnât understand the lyrics.
Then a few months ago I had a discussion with my dad about the Beatles and their songs, how creative they were, how diverse their music is, and how much output they created (they released a dozen studio albums, more than two albums a year, all between 1963 and 1970).
We concluded that we both probably donât know dozens of their songs, possibly ones that we would like.
I am also a huge Oasis fan, and the Gallaghers keep talking about the Beatles as well. So I decided to purchase all those 200-something songs.
So I went to the Internet and looked to to buy a CD box. I like having CDs even though I usually rip them to have them in my car and so on, and my parents usually listen to CDs as well. Ridiculous prices, 500âŹ+ for the whole set (the 2009 remasters).
But I didnât want to just pirate them. I buy music that I like. I added all the CDs to my shopping cart on Amazon but they were still kinda expensive.
âŠso I went to local listings and was lucky, a guy somewhere near Stuttgart sold the box (all of the CDs still sealed except one that he had listened to) for a bit cheaper than buying all of the CDs on Amazon would have been.
I had to pick them up in person though, so I had to drive a bit more than an hour. I combined it with a trip to a museum in the vicinity so the family had fun as well.
The last few weeks I listened to the albums, and there are really some gems on there.
I like quite a lot of songs that I had either never encountered or just not liked before.
(Wild Honey Pie, Dear Prudence, Strawberry Fields Forever, Baby Youâre a Rich Man, Maxwellâs Silver Hammer, Norwegian Wood, to name a few).
Comes with getting older I guess. I was also surprised how folk-/country-like a few sounded.
So yeah, I am having a blast and actually learning to play a few ânewâ Beatles songs on guitar.
Side note: I also realized for the first time that they are not spelling âHELPâ on the album cover, but âNUJVâ? I never checked it before but when my daughter asked what they are doing there and I explained that it were flag semaphore signals I looked them up to show her the whole alphabet and was first a bit confused and then a bit disappointed.
Anyway. Expect a few more Beatles posts soon.
Up until Help, they were just another wildly popular British pop group. Maybe the most popular, but still just another group. Their experimentation was limited, things like the deliberate feedback on I Feel Fine and such.
With Rubber Soul they really started trying new things and made an album that is still in the running debate about what is their best album (no album before is ever in that consideration). Revolver and Sgt Pepper just plunged headfirst into it, especially after they heard the Beach Boysâ Pet Sounds album.
While some groups have switched genres, like punk to pop or rock to country or whatever, almost none have ever just bounced around within even the same album to just do whatever came to mind at the time.
There is no more eclectic group of songs recorded in one stretch than the White Album. Country? Folk? Heavy Metal? Light pop? Ballad? 1920âs homage? Rock? Avant garde sound collage? Yes.
Good points. They are fascinating.
BTW, I noticed that I seem to like some songs that are consistently brought up by people when they discuss what the worst Beatles songs are.
Which is funny because the same happens to me when I talk to people about Oasis songs.
So yeah, I apparently have a really bad taste in music. But I donât care.
Edit: Oooh I havenât yet thought about which album I like best. Iâll have to re-listen to a few to be able to tell. I tend to say Sgt. Pepperâs right now but that isnât a really informed decision.
Personally, I have no all time favorite. I have my favorite now.
Next month that may change!
I noticed as the deluxe remixes came out over the last 7 years my favorite was the one most recently released.
There is no bad or good taste in music. Itâs all subjective.
You say that but you havenât had this shite blasted at you by a workplace radio (yeah youâll love this @Victork2, get someone to translate the lyrics for ya, they are as awful as the sound is) :
That drop though
Wow. I love you crazy dutch hardstylers.
In other news, the lineup announcement for download 25 was released this evening.
Iâm meh about it compared to last years but some stuff Iâm looking forward to.
Oooh, you went to the Yacht Rock.
I didnât automatically hate it. Does that mean Iâm not old, or just that Iâm â â â â â â in the head?
Edit: translated the lyrics via Google, and now I do hate it!
How are the sex pistols still alive? Thatâs kinda disappointing tbh.
