What we hearing? - Mudspike plays (2020)

Holy crap, Genesis Owusu is the LAST person I would’ve ever expected to cover the Sex Pistols.

That’s a great song.

The way the guitar and the saxophone flow into each other at the end of the guitar solo is my favorite part.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m a big fan of surf. As in Dick Dale and the Ventures, but also newer bands like The Madiera and The Anchovys. Get your reverb tank on.

This showed up in my YouTube feed recently and for once, the algorithm gods struck gold. Cuban surf, a la Ry Cooder and some very talented Havana musicians. Who would have known it was a thing? Rabbit hole thus revealed, here we go.

This song makes me want to take my clothes off. The album is amazing.

A wonderful 2003 NPR interview with Ry Cooder discussing his musical interaction with Cuban guitarist Manual Galban.

Interesting… don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite like that.

Yeah, but that guitar is unmistakably Ry Cooder though… I like it.

In the NPR interview, he breaks it down. He plays accents, like steel guitar, on top of Galban’s lead and is the producer.

I’ve been on a Teddy Swims kick lately. I enjoy his vocals and well thought out lyrics. The man is a storyteller. This is one of my favorites from him.

WOW, this sounds like something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie…

Yeah, spaghetti westerns, spy films, and surf have a common feel.

The Beatles are among a tiny select number of groups where I have all of their albums. Pretty much everyone else I just get their greatest hits CD.

Same here. I am pretty sure that the only bands I own all (studio) albums of are :

  • The Beatles
  • Oasis

I have a short list but it’s longer than that:
The Beatles
Paul McCartney
Billy Joel
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Stone Temple Pilots
Weird Al
Genesis
Phil Collins
Garbage (maybe, I might have missed a recent album)
Do the Traveling Wilburys count when they only had 2 albums?

There are a lot of bands where I have almost everything they did but perhaps don’t have their earlier stuff (like Pink Floyd pre-Meddle), or maybe their later stuff, or maybe I only have the middle releases but the beginning and recent stuff leave me cold.

Beast in Black is awesome and Yannis Papadopoulos has incredible pipes, especially here:

If you know their story, this hits hard:
