Me and the wife are going to the cinema to watch that as soon as we can
LOL! Yep, going to have to put that one on my list of movies as well. Looks superb! I didn’t look the movie up on IMDB yet but Santa looks like he is played by that actor in Stranger Things, the one who is former Sheriff, adoptive dad to six or is it seven?
David Harbour. Yep, that’s him.
We have had some ‘average to say the least’ weather for the past few days and because it is too soggy to get much done around the farm, the bride and I decided that we would go to the cinema yesterday… something we literally haven’t done for years.
Decided on ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ because of the leads (Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba), despite it only receiving average reviews. Bottom line, we both loved it.
Ummm, that’s not quite right. Tolkien’s estate ‘refused’ to sell the rights to the Silmarillion and “The Rings of Power” is instead (very) loosely based on the Appendices to “The Lord of the Rings”…
That said, I am kinda enjoying it for what it is and not getting too hung up on the whole ‘but it isn’t true to the lore’ thing. Same as I didn’t mind the Halo series, but I am a Sci-Fi and Fantasy tragic
However, if they ever make a WH40K series that didn’t adhere to the lore, it would be a completly different issue
Yeah, I’ve come to realize that regarding Rings of Power after the release. That post is a pretty old post and was my understanding before the reviews and such came in. I actually have not yet watched it and frankly, not sure I will considering I’m a big Silmarillion fan. Big disappointment for me and to be blunt, I’m not all that motivated to watch it anymore.
Yeah, sorry about that. I’m fairly new here and only just discovering some of these threads.
So am I. I have only watched the first three episodes and even though it isn’t exactly rocking my world I will probably continue with it. I just have to keep pretending that it set in an ‘alternate universe’ Middle earth
No worries. The Silmarillion is just a beautiful grouping of short stories. So many good ones that would be wonderful to see on the big screen, provided they stay true to the writing, IMHO. Those fantastic stories give so much background to when one reads “The Lord of the Rings” you have such a better, deeper understanding of that group of stories and the themes the book centers on.
I don’t know the reason or background as to why the “rights” to those stories weren’t given but it seems to me that if you going to spend a $1 billion on a film series and you’re basing it on the Lord of the Rings, you should have those stories secured. If you can’t, then do something else IMHO.
They are aren’t they I first read The Hobbit when I was 10 and Lord of the Rings when I was about 12. But it wasn’t until I was in my mid-teens that I was able to wrap my head around the Silmarillion.
I am not sure either. Maybe it was due to the changes Jackson made with Lord of the Rings (especially The Return of the King), but I can understand the context of those changes in order to be able to bring it to the big screen. Or, maybe even with the budget they weren’t convinced that Amazon would stay true to the source material and/or do it justice?
The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves–or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world’s leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government’s witch hunt for the alien. Seen by many as a political, religious and humanitarian effort, the film is based on Harry Bates’ story, “Farewell to the Master.”
Man, one of my all time faves. Probably the only movie I have watched more times is Monty Python and the Holy Grail… and that’s a lot
Klaatu barada nikto
Based on a book I loved decades ago as a kid. A nice low budget home film.

Well that one is going on my “watch list.”
First two were good IMO
Mine too. I thought Chloë Grace Moretz was awesome in Kickass and my secret shame is that I will watch anything Sci-Fi… good or bad.
That looks way better than The Kanye West show.
I tried my hardest to listen to a recent Lex Fridman podcast with Kanye West … couldn’t do it!!! Couldn’t even listen to him on the JRE. Ye is soooo damn stupid. He really likes Elon Musk tho which is cool I guess.
