We haven’t mentioned The Odyssey. I’ve seen it twice now: first on digital IMAX and later on 70mm. The first was loud and the “screen door effect” made the experience like watching the movie on my original Oculus Rift. The second viewing was stunning. Much of the movie is in the shadow of the horse, already an oft sung legend memorized by the people anxious for Odysseus’ return and the suitors who want his certain death to be acknowledged. The horse was the brainchild of Odysseus, Agamemnon’s most brilliant general.
I am not alone in thinking that the movie itself is like the horse. Nolan made choices that he knew would be controversial. Certain people just could not stay silent about those choices, even though they had not yet seen how Nolan’s vision would play out on screen. They unwittingly helped bring the film through the gates while they looked as stupid and backward as Penelope’s suitors. Odysseus’ dagger drop is Nolan’s mic drop.
I have a love/hate relationship with Christopher Nolan. Interstellar blew my mind. I still can’t sit through the scene between McConaughey and his dying aged daughter without fighting back tears. Nolan’s movies have to be watched without thinking too deeply about what they are saying (probably something about time). Just let the sights and sounds in. But once you start analyzing, the holes appear and the magic vaporizes. Oppenheimer was a movie where I couldn’t overlook the holes. I hated it. But it won best picture so clearly I was watching it wrong. I took that lesson to The Odyssey. Just watch and listen. Don’t fret over the viking ship, the modern American English or Agamemnon dressed like Sauron. Soften your focus and just watch and listen. Yes, I loved it.

Well… We all knew this was coming in some form, eventually.
Now lets see some old Star Trek episodes with Kirk and Spock etc, redone with Star Wars level graphics/effects.

I watched that before you posted it here, and found it an interesting case study. And not very good.
But still over the top slop. Kinda realistic graphics mixed with comic movement. Okay it‘s all supposed to be a dream, but that doesn‘t fix it for me.
If this is the future of special effects, I‘m already bored.
In the past week I sat down and watched One Battle After Another. Felt it could have been a documentary. I would have loved it if it had gone on for hours more.
Last night sat and watched Sicario. What a visually enchanting movie. The scene where they done the NVGs and descend into the valley during the sunset is one of the most cinematically perfect compositions I’ve ever seen. Superb.

Sicario is both ugly and beautiful at the same time. I love what they did with the main character, how they tell the whole story. Probably watched it 4 times already.
