On my wife’s insistence…just started watching AppleTV’s “Servant” last night. Pretty cool premise and after two episodes I’m pretty hooked in. A smidge of marketing for Apple (always)…but the filming style and mood does have the M. Night Shyamalan (a hit or miss guy for sure) stamp on it.
I’ve never been a big fan of Tom Green but I’ve been enjoying his “Van Life” series on YouTube. It’s both interesting and relaxing … just him, his dog Charlie, his Mavic drone and his Van travelling to intetesting places in the desert. He also produces all the (kinda eerie) ambient music from the van.
I actually laughed a few times…not as good as the first IMO but a stupid/silly fun flick and that is how it has to be seen…they have gone big for the nostalgia value.
Star Trek Picard on the other hand…they seemed to have rewritten Picard into a wet rag…can’t watch it…terrible.
Both of those Star Treks are 2 out of 10 for me where as “The Expanse” is more 9 out of 10
Not to be confused with the Kelsey Grammer comedy Down Periscope.
James Garner is tasked with photographing a Japanese code book on a Japanese held island. Costars a pre Gilligan’s Island Alan Hale Jr. and a very pre Monday night football announcer, Frank Gifford. The 6.5/10 rating on IMDb is about what I would rate it.
36 Hours:
Another James Garner movie but this time he is captured by the Germans who have 36 hours to trick him into giving the plans for the Normandy Invasion. Costars Eva Marie Saint as the nurse married to his character and Rod Taylor as his doctor/interrogator. I would give it an 8/10 while IMDb rates it 7.3/10.
An interesting side note is that John Banner and Sig Ruman appear together on film for the only time in their careers. And why is that unique? Sig Ruman played the Sgt. Schulz character in the movie Stalag 17 and John Banner played the Sgt. Schultz character in the tv series Hogan’s Heroes.
The Mechanic:
The Jason Statham version. IMDb rates it 6.6/10. I enjoyed it better than the original Charles Bronson version that I tried watching a few months ago but it is not one I would watch again. I loved the original version with Bronson when I saw it in the 1980, years after it theatrical release, but it just did not hold up for me at my age now.
Edit 1:
Moved the IMDb links so the preview pages would show.
Edit 2:
I cleaned up some spelling errors and I added another note about the costars to the Up Periscope movie.
The movie took place roughly 39 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor and now it has been a little over 40 years since the movie came out. It was still an enjoyable watch for me even after all these years.
Me and the youngest daughter have just finished the Star Wars series… all 11 movies, and can I just say … all of the slating that the last three movies got … was well justified, they were terrible.
There were good points and bad points with every single Star Wars film. I’m an unabashed fan but I know the flaws and will never argue against someone not liking them. Its all good.
But we got the mandolorian out of them. This is good. This is the way.
Plus the whole new trilogy was worth it just to see Han, Luke and Lando again. Even if only briefly.
Rogue One isn’t just a great Star Wars movie, it’s a great war movie. It’s in its own class when it comes to the Star Wars hierarchy. But yeah, it makes me wish they’d let Gareth Edwards do more instead of JJ and Rian Johnson.
I like Rogue One of all the latest Star Wars movies. I’ve watched it multiple times. Whereas the latest trilogy, only once in the theaters.
My friend and his family took me to dinner and to see Rogue One on Christmas Eve, which was the day my mom passed away. My friend didn’t want me to be alone. If I knew that everybody died in Rogue One, I probably would have waited a bit. So whenever I rewatch Rogue One, it brings up other memories. But a good film none the less.
