…and now my 5-year old motherboard appears to be in its last legs - USB ports are dropping out. Might as well upgrade the CPU at the same time, right?

HDD’s have in the past more longevity. With current SSDs handling up to petabytes of writes before dying - not so much an issue.

The other thing is a dead HDD may be recoverable. An End-Of-Life SSD will brick itself (and not even power up - it takes the cyanide pill) and all the data is gone, without a final warning. You should see worse performance and a “reaching end of life” alert beforehand.
