Gatlinburg has grown up, tremendously, since my first visit in 1995.
And continues to grow each year. New attractions planned or expanded.
At home, perhaps - I can guarantee that @Troll has a better view from his “office” than I do from mine ![]()
Since our kids start school this Thursday only, we took advantage of a fairly good weather (still) and headed to Hermeskeil in Germany for yet another visit to Flugausstellung, a privately owned museum of mostly military aircraft.
There is much to be seen so I selected few aircraft which are depicted in one of the available sims. Let’s start…
Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun. Not seen much around I would say.
Junkers Ju 52/3m nicknamed Tante Ju with original instrumentation.
North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco. I was surprised by its relatively short wing span of 12 meters. The C172’s wing span is only 1 meter shorter.
This one is for @Troll
Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation. In this particular aircraft Konrad Adenauer flew to Moscow in 1955 to negotiate return of 10 000 war prisoners.
Of course…
Fouga CM.170 Magister
My favorite interior…
…of my favorite aircraft.
Now some quiz questions:
-
Which one is this one?
-
To which aircraft does this pit belong?
-
And this one?
And few honorable mentions
A DC-6 engine
He 111 H-16. It is actually a very nicely looking aircraft. I am always surprised how small it actually is.
The museum does a nice job of displaying contemporary opponents side-by-side. This shot shows nicely how the MiG-21 is smaller than the Phantom F-4.
Su-7B. I am not aware of any flight sim that would allow us to fly it.
And probably the largest helicopter ever, the Mil Mi-26?
1 is a MiG-23BN
2 Russian. Four engines. Old. Does look like some sort of transport to me, not a bomber. AN-12?
3 might be some sort of MiG-15?
Looks amazing @apollon01 ! What part of Deutschland is it in?
I thought 17 maybe.
The west, southeast of Trier, close to Luxembourg.
not sure what no1 is but it looks like its set up for harpooning whales ![]()
Haha!
@schurem nailed the no1 actually. It is a MiG-23, though I am unsure about the “BN” variant. That is yet another level of detail well beyond my ‘radar’.
Schurem also guessed well the MiG-15. Funny thing is that while it got Soviet livery, the labels in the cockpit were in Polish.
Let’s wait with revealing the no2. I am sure @Deacon211 might… just barely might know ![]()
I almost thought the first one might be a MiG-27 from that angle but the nose does look a bit pointy.
And I’ve stared at that view enough in the last few weeks to recognize the Connie!
The last one seems familiar but I can’t place it. Ah, MiG-15, nice one.

Probably a license built LiM-2 then, just like that Bf-108 is a french built Nord 1002 Pengouin. The Heinkel 111 is a Casa 2.111.
But they are all better known for their original names… ![]()
I used to live in Waldmohr, when I was stationed in Germany. I’ve visited Hermeskeil many times. Thanks for sharing your trip and bringing back fond memories.
Lake Street Drive?
Yep. Better half’s best friend/ work collab buddy is a superfan, and got tickets and invited us along.
Also managed to catch Fat Albert and the Blue Angels on the ground in Gary, IN prepping for their air show along the Chicago waterfront a few weeks ago. It’s a poor picture, I was too surprised to see them and didn’t have time to grab anything but a low quality mobile picture
