Where You Are Photos (2020)

Interesting car moved this morning. An 1970 VW being readied for full restoration. I like it when the past is kept alive even if I have no “specific” interest in it.

How did you get it onto the trailer? Use ramps?

She tilts on hydraulics and ramps are hidden under the number plate.

You are very kind, thanks.
I nearly had a job to Athens this weekend but It got cancelled just after I booked the ferry from Italy. But luckily I got my money refunded. The work is there for me I just can’t seem to nail it down just yet. I was gutted when they cancelled the job. It would of solved the problem of survival for the month lol

I drove a ‘VW Variant’ once

It was quite a nice thing actually. Thats why I posted the picture as it was an unusual car that I wasn’t familiar with.

On my 16th birthday I went solo (minimum age in UK) in a Kadet Mk3. My brother allowed me to drive his hire car solo (a Variant) down the Gaydon taxiway. I turned off onto a dispersal that led to my first ever emergency stop. Just!

Be sure not to overload them ramps bud. I had two under my number plate, but some fool drove baby bulldozer up 'em and bent them out of shape. They’re not that expensive to replace, but in your first quarter you want to be careful.

Ooh ok!! Nice one thanks for the tip! I hadn’t thought of that and that really would be a showstopper for me! Thanks mate. I’ve not actually looked to see what thr ramps are rated for but they are pretty damn heavy things so I bet they aren’t cheap to replace and if one bends there is no way I’d get them back into the rack that they sit in.

I would think so. I’m not great at planetary observations…but it was definitely the brightest light in the sky at that hour.

Apparently you can no longer get permits for wide loads in Europe for 3.5 ton british trailers due to the complete CLUSTER%**/ that is Brexit.
I spent 5 hours of my life on the phone today trying to get a permit from Madrid Airport back to the UK for a 757 Engine cowl.
So I’ve bought a trailer a MONTH after they changed the rules. I am so angry I could catch fire.
I don’t get upset easily but I have half a mind to go and dump my trailer on Boris Johnson’s lawn covered in human excrement.
Speaking to a friend in the know, he has implied that as of January there will be a set number of ECTR permits available for uk hauliers and they have already been allocated for the next 2 years. Meaning that no owner driver or small firm with a few trucks or blokes like myself can take freight abroad. This is going to absolutely CRIPPLE small firms.
I’ve still got work so its not all bad but JESUS I took a pummelling today. All this after coming off a 15hr night shift.
I need to go to sleep. But I’m too irritated and stressed.

Rant over. Thanks for listening Mudspikers. I appreciate having somewhere to vent.

I’ve been following the rule changes quite closely as far as possible given the aptly named “CLUSTER%**/” and yes that is probably correct. Though there will probably be no deal come January as it’s looking right now so even those that do have the right permits might be out of luck. Right now it depends on if the UK is will to reciprocate basic road connectivity for the first 6 months.

" Basic road connectivity: A proposal for a Regulation covering basic connectivity with regard to both road freight, and road passenger transport for 6 months, provided the UK assures the same to EU hauliers."

Unfortunately British haulage associations have been screaming for clarity for months but the UK government hasn’t been forthcoming what they plan on doing in the various scenarios.

Your anger is justified. I wish I had something positive to tell you but alas.
