Yeah, it was kind of a huge deal when they were filming, even more so than Dirty Dancing.
I was at ILM today and wow what a treat. Jolly Rogers Super Hornets and USMC legacy Hornets were hot refueling together. Four AV-8B’s including a TAV-8B and the VMFA-115 CAG bird were parked nearby but I couldn’t get close enough to get good pictures of them. Also had a couple low passes from some Ospreys. Kids loved it, it was like our own private air show.
Went there while doing the Blue Ridge Parkway. Very nice.
Made (finished) a thing today:
This used to be a fairly boring front yard. Straight tiles (you can see them stacked by the tree in the background). We built the fence so the backyard is truly enclosed, they want privacy. Or safety. Or cosiness. I dunno.
Anyway. The point of pride is the new flooring: Those are little 10x10x7cm stones set in heavy sand to keep them in place with a layer of black, live soil on top of that. We also built the wavy wall for the planter.
Instead of killing the weeds and fighting the green, we’re inviting them in.
It should still be a place you can walk a bike across, or have a cup of tea in the sun. The open soil between the stones should ensure the soil still breathes, and keep the place just a little cooler in summer. Plants make the air better.
It took me two hours of meticulous fiddling to get the pattern just right. That was a very neat job to do, much zen.
I bet that made your eyes go funny stareing at that brick pattern whilst putting it in
You’ve posted a couple of pics of your wavy walls now and they look fantastic. I really love the lines you make. So much so that I showed the wife, she wants to replace the knackered old planter in the garden with something similar and build a knee high wall around our patio.
Could I use something like block paving bricks in multiple colours or would you say something else?
For one, don’t buy bricks or tiles, go find a load of pavement tiles or used bricks that people want rid of. Broken in half paving tiles stacked four to eight high without mortar make for excellent planters.
Could you pm some pix of your situation and possible building materials already present? Or maybe take this to the gardening thread

My Spring Break vacation ends tomorrow. I have to be an office-boy from 9-5, Monday through Friday… I sent Georgetown Cupcakes to my AME for delivery Monday and might buy the entire Atlanta FAA medical facility some Krispy Kreme donuts. Whatever it takes.
There’s also the important office skill of walking around with a purposeful stride with a sheet of A4 in your hand, wearing a slightly concerned expression.
Really you’ll just be heading over to the fridge to pour another beer into your coffee mug but everyone will think, “wow, Chris is really taking his desk stint seriously!”
If I drink beer until 7PM they will think I’m extra diligent…!
I’m sorry that they are making you sit in the office Chris. Hopefully they are giving you something interesting to do.
A laptop and msflight… Say you are practicing flight plans
Clipboard. Far more essential you have a clipboard
Wear a hard hat and a Hi vis vest and you can do anything you like. Double points if you carry a toughbook and a tape measure.
Add a Sharpie permanent marker. If it warrants a permanent marker, it must be serious! Especially if it’s in RED.
I don’t know if they should let pilots out of the cockpit to handle all that expensive equipment and dangerous substances…seems a bit reckless!
The other day - no lie…I had a wrench in my hand. A wrench. Think about that.
