Why do developers make bad videos?

Today we saw another example of this with the Leatherneck Tomcat. I was so excited until I saw the video. While nothing will dampen my excitement for the Tomcat, the video was truly underwhelming. And yes, the only thing missing was a guitar solo.
Belsimtek makes great aircraft as well as great videos for their intro. F-86 was made in Nevada long before any of us had it. I liked the UH-1 intro as well. Other companies should take note.
Leatherneck’s MiG intro was a tease. When it comes to my money I want to be awed not teased. It was good quality but left me ehhh.
komemiute is right, if it were up to me, I would have Glowing Amraam make all of ED’s intro videos… yes even the third party people. He is awesome.

I don’t think it’s fair to include the recent tomcat vid in the “bad promo” category, or even a bad teaser. I see it as more of a dev update, showing current progress. Being the first time it’s shown in the sim is enough to get the hype train started for me.

Given the tomcats “showtime” reputation I would expect nothing less then a over the top, mildly corney promo when the time comes.

Yep, concur.

Frankly, noise is an issue in my house. I’ll be checking to a promo video of some jet…it will go into AB…and I get the “Put it on mute or get out of the living room” look from my darling wife…just say’n

I think it’s got a lot of cool stuff but I just don’t know about the idea of flying it from the boat, in bad guy country to do work, and then back to the boat again with only one motor. The Rhino has a ton of redundancy such that if you have an issue with one of the motors, you can still likely get back aboard with no issues or, depending on the situation, at least to a divert field.

Ehem… back to bad videos, I see the recent F-14 video as more of a development diary kind of video rather than a full trailer. Still, even dev diary videos can be well done to produce good content and insight as to what’s going on internally.

Just got to the point where Kenny Loggins does not start playing in my head when I see the Tomcat. Now its going to happen again.

Perhaps you’re right. It was just a development video and I still learned a lot. Like where they are with it. But I figured they would wait until something more substantial was on hand. Don’t get me wrong, they are one of the best modules (IMO) and I expect great things from them. Just thought the video clip could have been better again, imo.
On second thought, I re-viewed the MiG-21 intro and it is pretty col. I remember that Christmas morning feeling when I first saw it. The part where they escort the bombers still makes the hair in the back of my neck stand up.

Except the entire reason they released the video was because people were complaining that they had not released information in a while. As someone mentioned that was basically a dev video instead of a promo video intended to convince someone to purchase the module. If you’re interested in the project, it was a sly way of showing:

  • Cockpit Model and some working gauges
  • External Animations (Gear, Tailhook, Flaps)
  • Shittycast™ brand HUD stuttering
  • Viggens
  • AFM working on carriers (which is new technology)
  • the general F-14 flight model.

As some one who has spent the last year purchasing every Tomcat history book he can get his hands on and pouring over its systems and layout, that video is like a nice hit of crack.

How else am I supposed to describe a slightly under powered aircraft with ridiculous nose authority designed to one circle until the sun explodes?

Guys,
I never said it was a promotional video. I understand it was a dev video. I know the difference. As such the aircraft exterior was naked and the gauges not working. I get it. It was My Opinion that It could have been better.
My opinion is solely my own and I am not trying to make it anyone else’s. Just thought they could have done it better. Trust me, I will preorder the crap out of the F-14. Just was hoping for more footage.

Hah don’t worry, you’re definitely not the only one.

At the other end of the spectrum you might have the finest crafted promo that I have seen. Simply superb.

A very well produced video…I especially liked the “Star Trek-like” graphics to highlight various features, although I may have gone with a more 1940’s era theme.

But 13 minutes??!! I’ve written this whole post after I watched 2 minutes…and its still playing!

Too long.

Edit: They need to come out with a TACPACK version…and yes…the video is still playing.

Edit 2: Good grief…the film “633 Squadron” had less shots of Mosquitos

Want to see how to NOT sell your product? Classic example…Sim720 Stornaway…check out the screens - all of them are low light shots…and not a single one shows the actual runway. It still amazes me that developers will pour their blood, sweat, and tears into making their product and then do such a poor job of marketing it…

Have you offered your expertise (not sarcastic) in taking better pics of the product?
It really looks like the worst part of a train wreck…

No…LOL…but check out this guy’s review site…where he has fantastic pictures of the product… Heck, if anything they should ask that guy to use his pics…

Once again proving that developers should just spent some money on getting a qualified person to take the screenshots/video material.

After looking at the Air Daily X screens…I’d probably buy it, but it looks like the approaches aren’t really “challenging” enough…so I’ll probably pass.

I find looking at the official approach charts and the warnings included in them to be a good indicator if it is a challenge or a breeze. Especially when it says ‘certification required’

Yeah…sign me up if it has an approach gradient of 5° or greater, has terrain, or some whacky circle to land or missed approach procedure.

It’s like being a naval aviator. Only then having more balls for having mountains and ■■■■ being in the way. Bunch of planar cop-outs with their fancy smancy ships.

Well, I guess we could always shoot carrier landings while the ship is transiting the Strait of Gibraltar or something to add some terrain and MORE excitement…(heck…we can get shot at from both sides of the Strait too…!)
