For reasons I don’t fully understand, I had to update to Window’s 11 24H2 today. Other than the WMR thing, has anyone come across any big issues with this version; settings, gotcha’s, etc. This PC is only used for ‘playtime’.
I looked at the version and I was still on 21H2. Hmm,
Yeah, I think I heard a faint whimper seeping up from the bottom of that box I put it in.
It was really uncomfortable though; was a franken-headset when I replaced it - all manner of extra padding and straps. My biggest gripe: no backup now!
If you use many of the newer Ubisoft games, like Avatar, SW Outlaws, the last few Assasin’s Creeds, there is a known issue that can prevent them from running.
There are a bunch of other things I’ve read about that keep popping up that have labeled this Windows update Worst Update Since Windows 8.0.
However, there are always going to be plenty of people who never experience them.
Had an issue trying to install 24H2 straight from the media creation tool on another PC - just got a black screen every time the GPU went to widescreen format (older Nvidia GTX 1650 card, windows installs its own drivers before I can get the official ones every time). Managed to boot to safe mode (or whatever it’s called now) and install the official drivers, then it was fine.
It looks like for many of us Odyssey+ and Reverb G2 users that rely on WMR …that we got screwed bigtime by Microsoft. 24H2 removes all critical WMR support and drivers from the operating system, and if it’s been over 10 days since you upgraded, there ain’t no damn way to fix it. I’m in the preparation process of reflashing my computer with a Win 23H2 ISO and starting from scratch. 23H2 has security updates & support up until end of 2026, …but I’m sure I’ll have a new headset before then, especially since there’s supposedly a lot of the new headset offerings coming out this year in 2025, including Valve Index 2 (?). Even then, I’m sure Monado or some other site will have some sort of replacement software & functionality for WMR down the road in the future, but they certainly don’t have it now, and I’m not holding my breath. There have been some really great videos on YT concerning how to prevent your computer from updating/autoupdating to 24H2 (including downloadable apps like GRC’s InControl), as well as those providing links to the hidden apps we need in the microsoft store (such as the Samsung HMD Odyssey+ Setup app). For those with headsets that no longer function because of 24H2, don’t sweat it. It is a “PAIN”, but you can just peform a fresh re-install of Win11 23H2 (or Win10 22H2) from an ISO. Don’t look for it over at Microsoft though, because they’ve “removed” all versions of Win11 prior to 24H2. However, you can get it over at UUPdump. net. However, now the bad news, …there is a ‘catch’ here if you want to use your old existing headset. Microsoft will probably be ‘completely’ removing WMR and WMR Portal apps from the Microsoft Store at end of this year, and if Monado doesn’t have something to replace it by then, then we’re looking at headsets that won’t function anymore. Just pray they don’t remove it any sooner than that.
I’m an Odyssey+ user, and I flipped-out when I tried to use my headset after the update. I was so damn upset, and I worked for 2 weeks trying to find a fix or solution. Thank you for the welcome! Sorry I couldn’t leave any links. It won’t let me, because I’m new to this forum.
If you’re going to all the trouble of installing 23H2, then I’d advise getting it installed, installing Mixed Reality Portal, then cloning the drive. That way if there’s an issue you just restore from backup, doesn’t matter what M$ removes from the store.
There’s also InControl, a utility that prevents major updates installing automatically, or you can fiddle with the registry to do that yourself if you know what you’re doing…
