I just ran the updater and it says I’m up to date already.
Yeah…I think it might have gone out last night or yesterday. I just got the e-mail from Austin’s e-mail list, so that probably runs a bit behind…
Great summary by AlpilotX on his HD and UHD Mesh and how it compares to XP11 default scenery:
Let me try to quantify the differences (and where I write HD Mesh, there UHD Mesh would apply equally - generally speaking). And with the XP11 default Global Scenery I mean the one replaced with public beta one (later this might change).
-
HD Mesh Scenery v3: older data (approximately 2 years old) - XP11 default: newer OSM data (August 2016)
-
XP11 default has updated landclass data for many regions (compared to HD Mesh Scenery v3)
-
HD Mesh Scenery v3: older autogen placement algorithms and no special European roads during scenery generation (XP11 default has a slight edge here - at least urbanized areas might look better)
-
HD Mesh Scenery v3 has much higher resolution Mesh (this has NOT been changed in XP11 default do to scenery size constraints!)
-
HD Mesh Scenery v3 has much more accurate landclass representation (even if its based on older data as described above) because of its higher res mesh (landclass is bound to mesh triangles)
-
HD Mesh Scenery v3 has older (because of older OSM data) but more accurate coastlines (rivers, lakes, ocean) as XP11 default needed to simplify vectors ... again because of scenery size constraints.
So, in the long run (especially to iron out the first 3 “disadvantages”) I will possibly release a HD Mesh Scenery v4 (and likely some similar update to UHD Mesh). But this will not happen anytime soon … especially as I also wait for some further planned improvements in the scenery generator from Laminar (like including building height data, which has NOT been included in this first scenery released by Laminar with the public beta … yes, I can confirm this information as I discussed it with Ben Supnik).
Really been enjoying this, I was late to the party with the last one and FSX as well. Nice to join the fun with something that looks great out of the box, not that they sell boxes anymore
Good to hear that the base scenery has gotten quite a few improvements. Let’s hope AplX can make his magic work!
His work looks great.
If I can get the sim working on my PC (or my next PC that I may or may not buy in the next few months) I’ll get it and donate him some bucks.
I was never a too great fan of photo sceneries (they often don’t blend in too well), but that mesh-based land-class refining by using OSM (I know OSM data well, it is part of my job) is a very good approach!
orth4xp + OSM data is the bomb from what I’ve seen
You just have to be careful because some of the OSM scenery packages having erroneous data that puts invisible objects in the sky. Ive mentioned this one before. Mysterious engine fires until you realize it’s the same spot every time and the replay shows you whipping about as if you hit a building.
But the mesh files are solid. A must have.
LOL…nothing like running into a Google pin in the middle of the sky!
Ok, since the sim is still running really bad on my PC (I admit I just didn’t have enough time for tweaking last night) I wondered:
I do have a pretty modern Laptop (i7, GTX970, 32GB of RAM), is it OK to install XP on two PCs at the same time or will I run into activation/deactivation issues and/or legal issues?
EDIT: I just read through the X-plane manual and there it seems to be ok if I install on two PCs. Otherwise these sentences wouldn’t make sense I think:
If someone manages to steal your product key, piracy is prevented by fraud detection; our servers will see your key being used in a pattern that looks like multiple people (e.g. your key used from two continents at the same time) and it will be locked. Downloading the product repeatedly may appear to be piracy and may also cause your key to be locked.
?!?! Looks more like a pro to me! poor little Eclipse never had anything resembling a stable approach though, squashed in between all those airliners. This was more of a free airshow!
One of my favorite features of new XP11 - the ability to see the parking spots on the map that you can spawn in…
Absolutely. That’s long overdue and a very welcome feature. Now, if we could get some sort of object library version control and online catalog. KPDK is really great, but apparently one of the needed libraries is no longer available. Doesn’t happen often though.
An auto-library that sees what you need and downloads automatically would be very, very nice. The fractured and diverse library system is pretty hard to keep up with…
Ok, so as I mentioned in chat last night, as far as I know all of Europe is working in my install except The Netherlands. Does anybody else have this problem?
Btw I have Northern and Southern Europe installed, do I have to install Iceland and Greenland as well? Or Eastern Europe?
I already tried de-activating South, didn’t work. Then flying with North only, didn’t work either.
X-Plane told me once which file is missing (I obviously forgot).
If I can get it to say that again, maybe obe of you can put that scenery file on Google Drive or Dropbox or something?
It gets weirder. X-Plane says +50+000/+53+005.dsf is missing. But when I look in the folder, it’s there. Except all of the dsf files in that +50+000 folder have a size of 0 kB. So, who can host those files for me please?
So if you run the installer - it won’t re-download the missing areas? If not, I’d suggest downloading the alpilotx HD mesh that you are looking for - these are the areas available:
Links to the scenery at on the mini map further down on the page here:
http://www.alpilotx.net/downloads/x-plane-10-hd-mesh-scenery-v3/
And if your rig can handle it - try the UHD mesh:
http://www.alpilotx.net/downloads/x-plane-10-uhd-mesh-scenery-v1/
Are those mixable btw?
I live in the northernmost part of the light blue area, and I do have alpilotx’s HD scenery for Germany installed (better than stock because Lake Constance isn’t missing, otherwise not SO much better overall in my opinion.)
I wonder if I could get a bit better results in the Black Forest mountains by trying that one tile… (provided my PC can handle it, which I doubt).
Yes…and if you follow the install instructions, the HD and UHD scenery will trump the default scenery. Now…if you don’t install the adjacent areas, you’ll obviously have a bit of a “seam” where the higher res scenery butts up against the default scenery…
