Watching Padres @ Braves,
11-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Uh oh

Watching Braves @ Marlins now.

Now watching: Washington vs. the brew crew.

Question from my wife (who apparently ogles baseball players’ butts):
What do the players have in their pockets?

Some seem to carry round or square objects in the pockets of their pants. Some are almost telephone sized. Any ideas?

round objects maybe be tins of dip, squarish ones
possibly little cards giving defensive alignments for each batter, batting gloves, or possibly the little shock absorber things that are currently en vogue (to keep from stinging your hands while batting, more so than gloves)

Shock absorbers look like this-ish

this would be a tin of dip, I won’t speculate on the brand

Thanks a lot!
I cannot believe people are still chewing tobacco, that stuff is pretty disgusting to me.

Dipping is still really common in the U.S. military, where it’s impossible to smoke a lot of the time, but stress + long hours + anxiety + boredom + guaranteed breaks every hour means a lot of servicemembers have taken up using tobacco in one form or another. But I agree with you completely on that- tried dipping once out of morbid curiosity, puked my guts out.

Don’t forget peer pressure/socialization. A brand new 18 year old fresh out of bootcamp is going to pick it up to fit in in 80%+ of their unit is doing it.

Watching Yankees @ Rays now.
That Rays pitcher (a guy named Snell) is pretty awesome. A lot of 95+ fastballs and tons of strikeouts because his pitches tend to just make it into the zone in all corners it seems.

Watching the Brewers play the Phillies now.

Brewers @ Braves now!
Home or away commentary??? Cant decide!!

I listened to both commentator teams for a while now. Both are OK but I am sticking to the home team I guess.

Edit: That Yelich dude though
he had a home run or two in every game I’ve watched him play now!

Question about something I noticed:
It seems Yelich bats with his left (I guess he is left handed), but when playing defense he is wearing his glove in the left hand and throwing with his right.

That’s a bit surprising to me. I would assume that if someone is left handed they would both bat and throw the ball with that side, which is usually stronger.

So
 any special reason for that?
I mean, maybe my assumption is wrong and half of those guys hitting with the left aren’t actually left handed?

It’s not unheard of. Run across it a good bit with other players on my kids teams. Also sometimes, one might switch to batting left handed early, when there are normally far more right handed pitchers, as it is an advantage. Sometimes it’s just more comfortable and then of course you have switch hitters (yelich is not one of them) who will bat from different sides of the plate depending on the handedness of the pitcher.

Before you ask, the advantage in being a left handed batter vs a right handed pitcher and visa versa mainly comes from being able to see the ball clearer and earlier out of a pitchers hand as your own body isn’t obscuring the exit position of the ball from the pitchers hand as much as it would be from the same side.

Bryce Harper is also someone who bats left and throws right, so my guess for both it was probably something that may have been drilled into them early to get an early leg up on the competition, not so different than a naturally right footed striker being exceptionally good with their left foot through practice and making a bigger difference early on. Although in baseball it’s not like you’re ever going to be in the wrong batters box with the ball coming in, so to speak.

Thanks!

The game I am watching right now is pretty action-packed! The Brewers were behind 1-6 in the 3rd, but they managed to hang on and even took the lead in the 6th, now it is 11-8 for them!

Also my wife and I just had a good laugh when we realized that Jesus sacrificed himself to take the lead. (JesĂșs Aguilar hit a sacrifice fly).

A lot of walks today, too. Maybe it is because they are playing in Milwalkee.

Wild one last night in the
wild card game. Looked to me like that pitch hit his bat first but hey that’s sports!
