Anyone interested in a trek? - The Polar Mission

This trek is actually happening right now IRL…

Seeing as we have a really great rendition of the Learjet 35A for MSFS (which is on sale right now), maybe there would be some interest in flying the same route? I’m thinking I might give it a go, although it will take me a little longer to complete than the real team.

Interesting, are we sticking to the listed route, or circumnavigate however we like as long as we hit both poles?

Looks fun!

I wonder if MSFS 2025 is more forgiving at the poles than 2020. I barely made it within 50 miles last year, before the sim locked up.

@Deacon211 I think that maybe a test run would be in order. I think that for our purposes, if the sim starts behaving oddly we should just call it close enough and head turn away from the pole.

@jenrick In the true Mudspike spirit of trek rules, I think we should fly the general route as we see fit, and in whatever aircraft we like.

Hmm, too bad we don’t have a good B-36 or B-52 for MSFS.

Not saying the Peacemaker won’t make an appearance, but I think I’m going to use something a little faster for at least some of the legs.

Leg 1 planned out, working tomorrow night, but hopefully I can get it knocked out over my weekend (Mon-Weds).

Okay took a little longer to get going on this one than planned, but leg 1 in the books.

Lined up ready to go

The office

Passing Barksdale AFB

And as the rest of the trip was at night, not much to show. Made it to Panama with about an hour’s worth of fuel left.

Just and FYI Enrique Malak Intl doesn’t have any kind of night landing gear, no ILS or PAPI, heck no approach lights for that matter.

Not sure when I’ll get to leg 2, but hopefully sooner rather than later.

Nicely done! I really need to get cracking on this but I have been otherwise distracted just recently.

I was going to get leg 2 knocked out his afternoon, but MSFS had other issues and crashed as I was about to get feet dry into SA.

Are you planning to reply the leg or just pick it up from the coast there?

I really need to write up my first leg, which I flew some time ago. I left the airplane on autopilot and went to attend to a couple of things, and when I returned I was out of fuel, gliding like a brick. I managed to deadstick into a small airfield about 30nm short of the destination. Pretty lucky!

I’ll continue on once I get my new yoke (which should be soon)…

If MSFS will let me gracefully air start there I’ll probably do that. I might also just pickup from Quito, and fly that as a fresh leg. The trip over water wasn’t terribly exciting/interesting except for finding out about Malepo Island. Other than just saying, yep I flew the whole thing in one go, I don’t feel any real need to fly that chunk again.

Wow, that’ll get the blood moving!

Yeah so MSFS did not do that gracefully, trying to use the “travel to” option left me at 5000’ with my gear down. Not terribly helpful. It’s about an hours worth of flying, so I’m conflicted on just flying the whole thing, or taking off from Quito. It’s not like I haven’t wasted an hour of my life in MSFS before, but it’s a pretty dull ocean leg.

You could start at SETN and do a short hop to Quito. I only suggest it because you would be missing out on flying into Quito which has some stunning terrain around it.

SETN is pretty much where you were when you had the CTD.

Not a bad option, I was originally just overflying Quito, but seeing the area in a little more detail than you get at FL410 might be nice.

I guess Quito isn’t an official stop for this trek. I’m going to drop in there though. I flew into Quito IRL several years ago. The approach brought us fairly close to the mountains…and they are not small.

Nice job guys!

Can’t you just slew “up” once you get dropped into the sim? It might require a little of that “pilot ****” to get her settled down, but worked IIRC. :man_shrugging:t2:

That occured to me after I had tried the “travel to” option. It won’t simulate fuel burn is about the only thing. I don’t have time this work week to fly the rest of the leg, so a moot point until tht weekend.

If you can’t remember what gas you had when the sim crashed, you can always estimate via fuel burn, G/S, and distance at least about how much you should be carrying.

Not perfect, but…:slightly_smiling_face:
