Well I need to run Wine or similar and get a few packages installed… I was just trying the other linux and it said I needed wine, net frameworks and some other things similar too openXR…
I will try Bazzite as that seemed more intuitive, I am having some issuess with this new distro haha!!
OK I am still having issues even getting 3D MArks Firestirke to run. I read that Bazzite is more like a console then a PC.
I also read Nobara is what I should use… I mean if you are using this bazzite on apc please let me know as I am totally out of my league here with linux stuff…
Well so far I am not even close togetting vr working. I am still unable to run games in Steam with bazzite…
I will try running assetto corsa and if that does not work after an hour or so I think I am going to throw in the towel… this can still not be this hard to get it working…
Well I had a little succes and I was able to get pinball FX working so this is giving me a glimmer of hope… I am trying to install nomans sky now and see where that goes. Assetto Corsa would not run just quit with no error message.
Will continue to tinker but if I get NMS working I may go for the VR Stuff next…
I did find my major problem with Bazzite, I had Gnome on and did not install Plasm desktop mode haha, it is a bit easier now to navigate and looks familiar…
I did get some games running I am attempting to install VR
Already on ‘main’
Your branch is up to date with ‘origin/main’.
CMake Error: CMake was unable to find a build program corresponding to “Ninja”. CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM is not set. You probably need to select a different build tool.
CMake Error: CMAKE_C_COMPILER not set, after EnableLanguage
CMake Error: CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER not set, after EnableLanguage

I get that far and get those errors. it says to use different build tool but what am I supposed to use if not envision??
I was running Envision to create the Profile for VR. that above line is where it errors out. It stated to use a differetn tool but I do not see one or am not understanding what they mean.
Yes I am pretty sure I ran ujust update. I found the way to update in the start menu but it says system failed update but all others ok??
Does the failed update to system just men no updates for system?
Thnx for the help but this is really strange and remenicent of past distros and problems I faced doing tasks in linux… but I am going to keep hammering at the gates…
Wow @The_Nephilim I am impressed at how quickly you’ve come so far.
I have a Recerb G2 as well and am using it with Envision and CachyOS.
I would not recommend VR in Linux to most people yet. The tracking is not as good, and the software stack is in not very mature yet.
Gaming outside VR is absolutely fine on Linux, and my half-joking comment was meant in reference to Linux generally making better use of the same hardware
Evidently you really are a great tinkerer, having already gotten VR running.
If you are going to continue your Linux VR adventure, I highly recommend this site and the accompanying Discord/Matrix community (same room is accessible from both mediums)
It’s full of people who know much more about Linux VR than anyone here and who are very helpful.
Btw it looks like your error is about missing Ninja, maybe you can install that? Not sure what command to use to do that on Bazzite
I will have a look at that site thank you for the link. I had installed ninja a few hours ago.
I am just one step from fully getting it to work in VR. The last step is to use Envision and make a profile but when I goto compile it I get those above mentioned errors.
I looked at the fix and they had mentioned going into the folder and look for a txt file which is not there so I can not make the necassary change to it…
Looking to go back a step and see if I missed something which I think I did… will persist a little longer but I did have game time scheduled for tonight.
Well that is not gonna happen now I am using my game drive for the linux install.
OK I checked out that wiki from the link at diskord. it seems there is a method to install the VR more modern way and with Bazzite…
I am going to attempt that but 1st I think I am going to need to clean up those dependencies I installed, I remeeber seeing a command to reset them and I can do the update for the correct way to install VR…
Also alot of things clicked all at once and I was also able to get DCS Installed, I am currently trying to get Mechwarrior 5 mercenaries working for tonights match, I hope it will work but I am just going to play on the monitor…
So far so good and learned alot over that las many hours haha!! I also lost a day somehwere
I got a lot of help from perplexity.ai (you can use any other reasoning LLM).
How to install Ninja on Bazzite Linux?
Blabla, use homebrew or download a binary.
So: brew install ninja
This might be oversimplifying things, but can be a good start. For example Homebrew can be interesting when trying to access a hardware device, you‘d have to manage file permissions for that.
Well either way I think I am about done with this little experiment… I found out Linux is still a very finicky OS.
And besides the state of my Wired G2 with Linux is not such a good state right now very buggy and not too good… while they have made good strides to get it working I do not think it will be worth the switch for me…
I will go back tomorrow and put my games drive back in order it was a fun but not too fun LOL!!
I appreciate the help and all but for myself I was doing better in Win11 still plus I had the G2 singing in DCS…
Yes if it was not for my VR Unit I may have kept using it for longer and I never thought Windows was a burden. I wish it was more like an OS and less like whatever they made it into…
I like Windows and Linux was fun every now and then I try it too see how it is going. it is really not too bad but sometimes it is just a pita because I really dont know what to do with it… like in windows I was a driver or program installed I install it with the exe and it just works most times…
With Linux it is a little more tweaking and googling involved and is not very consistent with the way you can do things… I liked Bazzite it was pretty cool but I don’t think it was super fast I mean it worked but I guess I am so used to Windows…
I hear the Q3 wireless version work pretty good with Linux so there is a plus but for me I guess old Windows will have to do…
Besides I did find a Windows light called FSOS which seem to work pretty good without all the bloat and a bunch of tweaks to the core of it… the only thing I lost was my Games drive as I used that for the Linux build…
So I am about to reinstall my games and such but windows was untouched… I guess it keeps me busy haha!!
Well after reinstalling windows now while DCS still runs good under 10ms of GPU Frametime. I tried those tweaks but am not able to get near those benchmark number I achieved before…
So maybe it was just a fluke thing and the stars aligned or whatnot but I guess those tweaks are not consistent…
I will retry the benchmarks especially Firestrike but ot sure where that score will fall… but I guess I should run it and see for sure but the one benchmark I was 400 points away from my top score… I think that was Steel nomad but not sure why I scored so high those few times…
