Astronomy shots

That’s looking great, Paul.

It something you can really be proud of. Takes a lot of dedication to make such beautiful pictures.

Thanks. I’m really happy with the progress I have made this past 12 months. Of course, the gear and software make things a lot easier than it used to be.

Gear and software allow someone to take good photos. You take great photos!

I am on holiday in southern Denmark again, and once again I saw the pretty stars, once again I used my phone (Galaxy S23) and once again I forgot to bring a tripod, so the following shots are shot from a table.

This one doesn’t look like much on first glance, but it has the Andromeda Galaxy in it, which I like.

And here we have both Jupiter (the bright one, duh) and Mars to the left of it. The Plejades are also in the picture:

Also tried the other lens:

Sadly they are all a bit blurry. I have to play around with the settings some more. And use a tripod.

Even with a 200mm lens you can see Jupiter’s Galilean moons.

Here are three of them:

Nice!

Jupiter is one of my favorite objects to look at in any telescope. You can either see moons or (when zoomed in more) their shadows on Jupiter, and when zoomed in even more you can see the structures on J’s surface.

And zoomed in even more you can see how Ganymede has been altered by the protovirus.

I just did a thing (again)… I just ordered a new 75mm refractor telescope that is specifically designed for imaging. It will give me a wider field of view for the larger targets such as nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy etc etc. Hopefully I will get a chance to test it out next week if the weather cooperates. The general rule when you buy a piece of astronomy gear is that you are responsible for cloudiness and precipitation for a period directly proportional to the cost of the gear. I guess we need some rain here in Texas  .

Cool… I can’t wait to see the imagery… How does delivery work with what I would assume is a very delicate and precisely engineered piece of equipment? I can imagine my Amazon driver slinging a telescope into my garage…

With the way our FedEx an USPS drivers are here, your gif is probably close to accurate Chris…and it will probably be dumped somewhere at the end of the driveway rather than brought to the house. Fortunately it is going to be well packed.

There is a partial lunar eclipse happening right now……

The Wizard Nebula (NGC7380) taken with the Seestar and processed with PixInsight. This little scope/imaging device continues to impress me. This was shot with the Moon almost full, which isn’t ideal, even with a light pollution filter.

It’s strange how that shot looks really good on my laptop screen…but pretty awful on my iPad. I guess I will have to work on it a little more.

Seeing that immediately conjures Douglas Adams’ bit on how space is big, really big.

First light with the new scope…

It is just a quick and dirty run at processing the image data. It could really do with about twice as much exposure time. This is 80 x 3 minute exposures stacked/averaged. If I get a chance tonight I will fix that.

Overall though, I am really very happy with this one. The stars are round right to the edge of the image, so the optics are good!

I stayed up way too late last night collecting more data for this image. This is 180 x 3 minutes subs (9 hours). I am not entirely happy with the colors but the image is cleaner.
