The last racing sim I really got into was way back in the 90’s (Geoff Crammond’s Grand Prix if I remember correctly). I’m thinking I would like to give it a whirl again. Is Automobilista 2 the sim I should be looking at?
For the widest variety of cars, karts and trucks (tarmac and dirt), in a new(ish) sim and especially if F1 is your thing; then most definitely.
Wrapping your head around the naming conventions (e.g. Formula HiTech = 1991/92 F1 cars) isn’t a problem because there are mods to fix that ![]()
Those 88-92 cars are glorious to drive. And the mods with all of the liveries, helmets, and adjusted AI skills make it a must do. And don’t get me started on the Group C. Wow. What machines.
I might have to give it a try then. Seems like there is a lot of DLC available. This could turn into quite the rabbit hole. ![]()
No need to go nuts with the DLC. I would start with maybe one or two of the car ‘packs’ or tracks that you particularly like.
If you get it from Steam, wait for when they have bundles on special for the rest.
You can also pickup Assetto Corsa for cheap and have some fun driving laps around. AI isn’t the best but it’s cheap and a lot of tracks and mods out there to enjoy whatever you fancy!
AMS2 base game is also damn solid with in general a good AI to drive around.
DIRT 1 and 2 are also on sale for cheap so if you want to scratch the rally itch then you got that going for you.
rFactor 2 is also on sale a lot but can be a bit fiddly and has some annoying quirks that still catch me out despite racing with it for years.
AMS2 is pretty solid in VR and has series templates, which allow quick creation of races and/or series for different car classes. Also does mixed classes (endurance) racing really well.
AMS2 has a garage full of cars, even without DLCs, that covers a wide variety of racing. Just about everything from F1s to V8s is there. There are some excellent mods available that are easy to install. It’s like a better version of Assetto Corsa, imho. I did pick up the Stadium Truck DLC because I missed driving them in the Dirt series. The driving is awesome but my only personal nitpick is the sound scape - sound is a thing for me. The sounds are not bad but they could be better. ![]()
Admittedly, my new goto racer is LMU because it delivers that “feels good” experience for me.
I’m getting pretty close to buying it. What is LMU?
Le Mans Ultimate, which is focused on the FIA World Endurance Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans. That said, you can drive car classes from GTs to Hypercars. It was developed by the studio that made rFactor 2.
Another plus for AMS2 is that it has the Mount Panorama (Bathurst) circuit… The greatest race track in the world. Not that I’m biased or anything ![]()
Something about Mount Panorama. I tend to eat wall whenever I run that track but it is a nice track indeed.

Speaking of tracks, I also like Laguna Seca, but the Corkscrew is a bane of my existence.
Looks like I will be able to ‘retire’ Assetto Corsa? The Nürburgring Touristenfahrten was pretty much the only reason I still have it installed.
I think I will definitely have to get that Supercars Pt2 DLC.
stil happy with my AC instal
but maybe I can try the AMS2 demo at least
