Battletech (May contain spoilers)

“Smoke 'em if you’ve got 'em.” A highlander without a Gauss (or better yet, ER or Heavy Gauss, though those probably aren’t in game) is a sad Highlander. If you lose it you could probably stuff a pair of the heaviest autocannons you have to keep it effective until you acquire another.

Agree with Aero. The only thing less useful than a destroyed Gauss Rifle is a stored Gauss Rifle. Keep him on the right side of your formation and keep your left side angled toward the enemy, and blast away.

Gauss ammo does not explode, nor should it. They are big nickel steel balls (heh). They exploded in MWO but not here. Should be in the tooltip.

Well i ran him a couple of times and you guys are right. Yep that gauss rifle is something good. He is my heavy hitter now.

Having good crew morale works very well for the precision strike perk. I try to have the highlander run last and precision fire on the area softened by the rest of the lance. Usally works well. If the enemy mech is not destroyed at this point, it is almost certainly knocked down from being hit with a gauss, around 35 missiles and 3 ppc’s

Purdy…

How is the recent update? I see its on sale for 20% off on steam sale now.

it is very very good. you’d be fool to skip this one. The robots are big and stompy and they fire big, huge and humongous weapons at each other. The game has enough intricacy to gice it tactical depth. Oh and it looks nice too.

Heartily reccomended.

latest update made the options menus more fine grained when it comes to difficulty, game speed and graphics. It also slightly rejiggered some of the pew pew.

Ok so I gave it a spin. I refunded it an hour later. Reading through the campaign stuff killed me. Might give it a go later on.

I also wish the skirmish mode could be played 1v1 on the same computer, much like playing the board game at home.

huh.

That’s like ditching DCS because you just can’t stand setting up the controls for your aircraft.

I bet more than one person has done that. Setting up controllers for each module can be intimidating at first.

oh yes. its a big hurdle.

Its easy getting people on general gaming forums interested because DCS looks so freaking beautiful these days. And then they get intimidated first by the description of fully simulated systems. So you tell 'em FC3, easy mode, fun for all.

And then they run it and their throttle makes the plane pitch wildly and they never look back. So sad. And so easily cured.

Just empty the default control config so the are obliged to set them, instead of the horribly broken default they get.

I literally do that with BMS. I simply (wrongly, I admit) can’t stand it.
I tried it again… same thing.

I think setting up the controls is all part of it for me, I enjoy it lol I’m just weird though

No offense, of course. :yum:

I’d been looking at this game recently. I really like the devs and all their Shadowrun games and sounds like this is turning out good too.

I pulled the trigger on this one last night - I was good and didn’t buy any beers on the way home so I was totally in the black already and figured NZD$16 on the Steam special was practically making money.

Only had a little bit of time to try out but so far so good! Brings back memories of Mech Commander…

Oh it’s better than mech commander. Deeper. Not as frantic because turn based. You like big stompy robots? You will  this mate. I know I did.

Yeah - I did love the unforgiving nature of the original (not Gold) Mech Commander: no difficulty level slider, no saving during mission, those sweet clan mechs kept blowing up so you had to rerun missions from the start if you didn’t want to run with IS iron all the way through.

So many moments of having done everything right only to have a shut down Hunchback IIc drop in from somewhere and get a lucky double AC/20 alpha on the arm of your flagship heavy and blast the hard-earned ER PPC to smithereens…

I earned my Battletech chops in MW2 bit in the end probably spent more time in MC and MC Gold.

I’m stoked about the turn based nature - works well in my current life situation.

I’ll be honest, I liked Mech Commander more. I think it’s the fact that this is NOT the tabletop rules. It’s close, it’s real similar, but it’s different and I’m not a fan of some of the differences. Mech Commander was its own thing, and I liked it for what it was.
