Christmas loot thread...

It’s brand new. I’ve flown it around the backyard just to make sure that all was functioning, but didn’t take any shots worth posting. The plan is to fly this weekend, weather permitting. I’ve had a Phantom 3 Pro since release, which I intend keeping, but have 2 friends with Mavi Pros. They say that once they bought their Mavics, they sold their Phantom and Inspire 1, respectively. While the image quality is not as good as the P or I, they say that the portability and low profile when flying, make the Mavic a better platform for the casual aerial image gatherer. I bought some of the new quiet props. You have to tweak the settings a bit more with the Mavic to get rid of some of the noise in video, but if you take time with it, the results are pretty good. Will be interesting, because 1080P just doesn’t cut it anymore, IMO.

Cool!
Looking forward to hear your thoughts after using it a little more then

I like the compact format, and the fact that it’s DJI.

I brought Kai’s Air Hog drone and my little Syma drone…but according to the FAA app, I can’t fly them here. (Even though they are under .55 lbs.?)

An app that shows drone restrictions…?

Yeah…it’s call B4YFly and it is actually pretty cool…it uses your phone location vs the FAA flight restrictions map to simply tell you whether you are go/no-go…

Maybe there’s something similar over here…

Isn’t there a height limit for the restrictions? Like below 50 feet or whatever is fine?

This is the United States you’re talking about here. We swat flies with sledgehammers. It’s super effective /s

AFAIK the .55lbs thing only applies for registration. The FAA is going to get heavier handed with remote control aircraft as time goes on, so it probably won’t be long before it’s treated like general aviation.

IMO, flying a tiny model aircraft the size of the Syma in you’re backyard or public park, as long as you are respectful, would not draw the attention of law enforcement or other authority. I’ve had cops stop and watch us flying FPV, and not said anything other than “that looks like fun”. To the letter of the law we were probably within 5 miles of PDK. Of course my paycheck doesn’t depend on my having a valid certificate, so YMMV.

Switch is on its way to my place just in time for my return.

Yeah…that was my thought. I can’t risk a violation even if it is Mickey Mouse type. I guess I can just put the controller in my son’s hand and make him do the hard time.

Sadly, all it takes is one nosy nancy type and it’s game over. People into amateur radio have been really getting hard on the RC community because a lot of FPV equipment uses frequencies that the FCC regulates as amateur radio. As a result, a lot of them have been contacting the FCC and reporting people, regardless of FPV use. So yeah, anyone with common sense will just tell a kid to be safe; but all it takes is one “respect mah authitah!” type and it’s game over.

Only other option is to try and find someplace indoor that he can fly it. There are RC clubs that do indoor fly-ins like this, so it might be worth scoping out locally to see if there’s any event like that.

As a late christmas present to myself i bought some new ski touring boots and ski.

My old boots were giving me horrendous periostitis on my shins on longer tours due to the periodic pressure when walking. Well, without exaggerating, material tech has made some huge strides since when i bought my first boots 12 years ago and the new ones are more than twice as flexible going up and incredibly tough for skiing, they are so stiff in skiing mode i feel like i’m wearing normal skiing boots. Took them on a tour today and it was a bliss.

Goodbye periostitis.

But then, since newer boots are no longer made to fit into the old Fritschi bindings, unfortunately i had to buy new bindings and ski as well. What a pity.
