If you own one of those houses…I hope they are considering driving a few cases of beverages over to the tanker base as a thank you… Enough for the maintainers too…I can’t imagine how much work it takes to keep a DC-10 airworthy…

It must be one hell of a challenge. The flight frequency must be increasing exponentially as well as the summer hits. Heroes all.

I guess my concern would be something like a propane tank lighting off and shooting up through that smoke or something given the ferocity of that fire. All well and good that he avoided the smoke…but did he really have to get that close? I dunno…I thought it was cool, but in this day and age of cell phone videos (unfortunately)…I’d always think to myself…how much internet outrage IS this going to cause?

Oh no I agree. Judging by his altitude he was on a 2 mile final—plenty of distance to give the smoke a wider berth. I am hardwired against any and all internet shaming. I see “WTF” and immediately want to push back. (Unless it’s Mark Maron. In which case I am all in. ((Glad you’re doing better Mark.)))

In '97 I was based in Iraklion, Crete. We usually took off to the west towards the city and the hill it was on. Watching Tupolevs make that takeoff was pure sport.

“This is airshow flying, not competition. I’m allowed to be steep!” I have been in love with her since I was 16. For anyone in the US who wants to fly with the Michael Jordan of 90’s aerobatics, she’s available. And she is still arguably the best acro instructor out there.

Watching that on my mobile and being able to pan the view around by orienting the phone just like I would be moving my head if I were really there makes for a very immersive experience!
