What an awful tragedy, really sad. I’m very sorry for the loss of your friend. I was impressed by how safely the ultralight/rotor ops had seemed to be conducted up until that point, and was surprised to hear about the accident. Luckily my son and I left about 0600 Thursday morning and missed all three of the fatal accidents that occurred.
I’ve heard of him–probably because his name has a catchy ring to it, but I don’t recall seeing the face. I am so out of touch with modern culture! Looks like a beautiful airfield. Good on him for investing in its future as an active GA hub.
Man, I doubt they had time to even think about anything like that. Fire light>Turning back>tail comes off>crash is about what it looked like to me. Just amazing.
1 fatality onboard Flight Paramedic Terryson, a fire captain. 1 fatality on the ground.
The three-member crew was heading to an emergency medical rescue to take the patient to the hospital. A video posted online shows flames coming from the midsection of the helicopter as it is trailed by a long plume of smoke. The helicopter then appears to break in half as it begins to spiral, plunging to the ground. A video from another angle showed that the helicopter’s blades were not turning rapidly.
Tony said that even as the crew members were declaring a mayday to the airport’s control tower and trying to save their helicopter, they were also radioing paramedics at the medical emergency to let them know they would have to take the patient to the hospital.
“We are talking about the character of these men,” Tony said. “As they were fighting for their lives, they were thinking about somebody else.”
This one we can laugh at. Twin Otter colliding with a Eurocopter/Airbus of some sort at St. Barts. Nothing hurt but a pilot’s pride (and, hopefully, job).
At around 11.42am local time, the plane landed on runway 28 and, according to flight tracking data, successfully touched down on the correct section of the runway. Due to currently unknown problems, the plane then veered left off the runway, onto a grassy area and then onto the apron where it struck the helicopter.
