DCS 2.5 Update Thread (2018)

Paging @Tankerwade @chipwich

Probably AI for now but seems like they are getting closer.

The Mosquito would be a definite interest to me if they make it a full fledged module.

Now we’re talkin’!
Pathfinder missions in a Mossie…

Thanks Andrew.

I had seen these and I am excited. I am also guarded. I was excited in 2017 and it got pushed back but whatever. It’s the feeling of your favorite air frame so close and yet not coming out that you think - at least it it is on the short list…I mean they are threatening me with it…

So the angst aside, ED has one of my favorite bits of the Jug down cold: from about the d-28 onward it was acknowledged that the P-47’s best destiny was as a fighter-bomber. Every air frame that came off the line both from Long Island and Indiana had the bomb racks installed by default. That’s right, she came dirty from the factory, full stop. That was a first for fighter designated aircraft.

When the bubble tops arrived in theater they were ready to hang bombs out of the crate. Time to go. There was no reason to send a Jug up without lugging some ordinance. The idea of multi role mission assignments
with a good chance of success in any area starts right here. 9th air force pioneered the concept that we can do something about the tactical problem right now, as it is developing. We have planes in the air that can let go the ordinance and intercept to maintain air superiority, or we can just drop the bombs where you need them. Right now. Jugs could drop ordinance on designated targets, interdict enemy supply lines, and sweep the air clear of enemy CAS, all in the same mission. From the minute the P-47 arrived and air crew were alarmed at the size of the beast, we developed a new way of prosecuting the air war - We Push the Pace. Our fighters not only escort the B-26’s, they participate in the strike. We are always getting inside your decision circle. We don’t need to paint the air frames, we are not hiding from you. We are turning over the sorties with the same squadrons with different objectives. Other air forces can change the objective mid sortie, we can change the sortie itself mid flight. From 1942 on, the razorback is no pilots idea of a good ride. But from 1942 on it is the beginning of every air planners dream scenario.

The Mustang was faster and even longer ranged, and the Spitfire was nobody’s choice to fight in any regime. The Dora could roll and the 109 could climb, but the Jug was the guy who brought brass knuckles to a fist fight. When Jugs were there everybody new they were there.

So I always cringe when I see a game shot of a bubble Jug all clean with no bomb racks zipping through the air. Didn’t happen. Good for you ED with shots of a D-40 (maybe? fin fillets were retrofitted) with bomb racks without the bombs. They tested it without. I am serious. The plane was so big and the engine so powerful that the racks did not appreciable slow the beast down. She wasn’t aerodynamic enough for it to matter!

I am excited, I have been all along. I won’t do my trade mark Jug poem, in this post anyway, but I will say this - I am not interested in the Yak, but if it was the path to radial engine modeling then I am grateful for it. All of the current WW2 aircraft are inline engines and that is not a coincidence. But I think the Jug will bring a lot of the flexibility of mission design, and reason for being, to that genre the way the Hornet has to the modern era. The milieu (I got to use that word ha) needs a heavy, and whether you take that term as literal or enemy, the Jug can handle it.

So what you’re saying is we should’ve got a P-38 before a P-47?

I would love to see more efficiencies in software production.

It always feels to me like they are making one off hand built Ferrari’s, when I want them to make model-t’s, if you get my abstraction.

But I have never done software coding, and I am reminded of that fact when I write the above or talk with coders here on TS.

DCS is like standing at an Ice Cream stand and waiting for them to stick a cone of Ice Cream out that I then decide if would like to lick or not.

(for the most part I like flavors they make)

Have the Clouds been updated?, they seem different or am I going mental? Too much Juice of Sapho me thinks.

Edit*
Has the reflection of the Cockpit always been in the F18s MFDs?

Aye

Just a heads-up for others that for me this update today has caused some perf issues with VR. I’ve rolled back. Your mileage may vary though.

I am wondering @fearlessfrog if the patch has changed saved graphics settings. i have noticed a difference in the way the sim looks and artefacts with ship wakes at long ranges. Not yet checked my settings as the boguslings have returned home

Can someone confirm that over-wing vapes have snuck in for the Hornet?

Yep, I hadn’t really investigated it at all. Just sort of did a …

…and rolled back after a quick flight.

It looks like ED are tracking it here, so I’ll check back on it later to see what’s up - maybe a Friday update incoming or a config tweak etc:

The AIM-9X seems to have received its 90 degree angle tracking, sure is deadly now. Much more so than before.

The AGM-65E no longer crashes the AV8B! yay!

A new sand-storm effect seems to have been added. It can be set in the mission editor. Controls for it are below the fog controls.

Yeah for this!

I wonder why this?

Because the f111 would look too awesome with it on.
