Samurai harrier, awesome!
2x Spanish harriers have just confirmed for the Royal International Air tattoo at Fairford this year…
Weren’t they literally the first participants confirmed back in January?
Doesn’t make it any less cooler though.
On the first RIAT in a few years I won’t be attending… typical…
I only got the confirmed aircraft yesterday. I consigned riat to spam after last year’s immense irritation it caused me so didn’t realise the plane list was updated
I found the missiles last night especially weird. I don’t think one 120C did anything as expected. The usual 30 nm from high & fast, letting one go and then a crank 60 into a slow dive, pretty much overshot and missed every time, despite being pretty reliable before. The -9M’s seemed to miss quite a lot as well, and nearly every kill I got was within 9M range but with a 120. I hope this is a temporary tweak in the open beta.
I think all player missiles have had some severe adverse changes done on the past couple of patches, especially in comparison to the AI’s. I do believe the AI has had some serious improvement in evasion that they didn’t have in the past.
I found the overshoot issue to be the same, even in cases with more than enough momentum to maneuver as needed for the kill. Franze noted and I can confirm, the 120Bs are definitely seeming anemic - they function at sparrow ranges more or less.
Along with Franze’s point of them out-maneuvering some missiles more frequently, the effectiveness of countermeasures seems to have gone up in regards to the AI’s use.
I’ll repost my crude MS paint sketch from the HP discord - but Sparrows work in magical ways now too:
Thirdly, if the AI is “confident” in having defeated your missile it will turn back and engage. The old “scared once it’s pit bull” idea for AMRAAMs is out. If you are close enough, they will shoot immediately. The implications of this are dire:
- In some cases, you won’t have lost lock even if the missile lost track with its seeker. While you are waiting for the TTG counter to hit zero in your crank, there may be a missile headed to you.
- Depending on the engagement range, you may not get warning of the above if the offending missile is an R-27T or ET. If you do, and break the lock via maneuvers or chaff - that IR seeker is still coming. A mixed CMS release, biasing from all chaff to all flares as range decreases I think is best currently. So in the ~20nm bracket, throw a few flares just to be safe.

It’s like I had a whole bucket of liquid metal and threw it on a Tomcat!
Tomcat T-1000
From a mission @Andrew116 is working on:
Tonight on HP North: buddy-lazing!
Weapon on target for @Franze in the F-14B with GBU-12.
And a follow up attack from @fearlessfrog in the F/A-18C with GBU-12 also hit it’s mark.
The Hornet was really effective with 8x GBU-12’s plinking stuff you picked out @Wes. The AGM-65E’s picking up the laser was far better than I thought it would be, with the only tough thing having no ranging. Using a data waypoint worked ok for that.
Also @Franze’s damaged Tomcat carrier landing was epic as well. So much black smoke on that it looked like a tire fire.
