There was either an F-22 or an F-35 that caught fire while taxiing, I forget which. The pilot got out fine and they hosed it down and from the sides you couldn’t see much wrong with it.
It was written off because the estimate to repair was in the tens of millions. Still a lot less than a new one, but that doesn’t mean it was considered economical to do so.
There’s been multiple fires on the F-35s, haven’t heard any from the F-22. A fire on either type is going to be $$$ any way you slice it. The F-22 canopy failure about 15 years ago was ~$250k as I recall, and that was just cutting open the canopy and replacing it!
Lately I’ve been working hard to be a competent/useful RIO. I had a wonderful time this evening. Logged about 4 hours flight time mostly LGB practice and the use of TALD.
Having the urge to fly some helicopters in DCS. Decided to set up new controls and HOTAS configurations. Taking a Gazelle armed with a minigun out for testing. Up and down, over the hills, between the hills and practice hovering. Taking in the beautiful view from down low in the map.
