Was looking at the ‘DCS: A-10C Operation Persian Freedom Campaign’ as something single player to do with my A-10C II skills (hint: none). Can’t really see much talk about it. I wonder if it is any good?
What we need is some sort of flight sim hobby review site, where all these things could be looked at a bit closer with independent and community written write-ups. Someone should look into that.
If I had the time to wrestle through a 12 mission SP campaign on short order, I would be happy to provide said review. But alas. Children and hopping mad boomtimes in the business.
Yeah, absolutely. Writing and doing a good review is actually a lot more time intensive that it would seem, it’s a slog sometimes as it hard to be critical (for the buyer) but then keep it positive just to relay info (for the seller). We should do more short articles, e.g. get some review copies set up, play the first 2 missions or something and then write it up on the main site. We need to make that super easy for people to do here, so there’s no obstacles or friction to be able to do it for those that want to.
What’s weird nowadays is that for pretty much any DCS google query, you’ll get the ED forums and then Mudspike.com turning up (Chuck’s guides or this forum). I’ve had more and more cases of being stuck on something flight simmy and then being googled back here, either that or a reddit thread which is pretty much a 50/50 split of poo flinging.
Wouldn’t one have to fly a campaign through to give a proper review? Of course I could fly two missions and then post impressions.
We should also host the DCS michelin guide. I dont know if its still maintained but that was a neat pdf of very succinct reviews of mods, campaigns and maps.
Ideally yes agreed, but thinking how we can make it work really, so better than nothing. I think we need @BeachAV8R to stop with all this ‘work’ nonsense time wasting and go get on with it properly and write more here . I also need to sort out something where we can go from ‘topic post’ → ‘mudspike article’ more at a single push of a button or something.
Wow, there are so many new campaigns now - sort of forgot…
All we need is a cool name for such a site And to give the site some character, a triade of highly dissimilar persons but very cool people as its founders And some extra cool people as mods.
I bought The “Raven One” Campaign on sale and “The Red Flag 21” Campaign for The Viper…The Latter not on sale but Bunyap does some Awesome well detailed stuff…This should keep me occupied till The Hind starts Hovering overhead!!
A user over on the other forums put together a nice guide to help see what the presets look like in practice. Figured our mission makers might find this useful.
I can recommend the ‘Operation Epsom’ campaign if you already have that sitting in your collection, have played I think 2/3rds of the way through.
Great documentation, missions based off of real ones flown from Normandy. There’s a thorough briefing but you are not penalized in any way for deviating; the missions are very much ‘try to hit your waypoints if you can, keep yourself and your squadmates alive, hopefully you will score some hits on enemy targets’.
The missions can be a little repetitive but it seems that’s how they were in real life so can’t really fault it for that.
Some good audio from other flights/controllers; the catch there is that unfortunately we are still stuck with our faithful modern wingmen/tower from 2011 or whenever. There are some good mods for period comms for RAF so I cobbled something together from a few that were out there that works pretty well.
The only other catch is the missions haven’t been updated with the new clouds yet, the campaign creator is hoping to get it done by the next dcs update so might be worth it to wait for that (I haven’t flown them yet, but Reflected’s WWII campaigns are supposed to be pretty great too). He’s updated them with the new clouds, so if you have ‘the big show’ one may be worth it to try that one first.
I used his data to create a quick reference chart for mission building, with METAR equivalents from comparing his screenshots to this meteorology class, and a subjective “texture” column for how detailed the clouds look. Still a work in progress but it’s on my Google Drive.
I own several modules in DCS and I’ve always had a problem with deciding which one to focus on. With the 2.7 update I have to say the Tomcat is EPIC now. I think they tweaked the flight model again? It just feels amazing. I just did a quick AWACS escort mission over the Caucuses mountains with clouds on one of the overcast settings. We got close to the Russian border and two MIG-31’s engaged us. All I have to say if you haven’t had a dogfight in the Tomcat yet go do it right now! If you survive, flip the music player on and do some cloud surfing to celebrate. My boys were yelling “OMG” and “THIS IS AWESOME” the whole time.
I think I might have to become a full time Tomcat pilot now. I continue to be amazed with the 2.7 update…
What is really depressing to me is when I Google something to find out something - and it comes back with a search result for something I already wrote about.
Or…I ask a question that I’ve already been given the answer to…
Only to see I bought it already…and even posted screenshots of it on my inaugural flight…
