So about that DCS AI…
“There I was…” flying a sortie in support of operation INSERT NAME HERE (see below if interested). Myself and Dilbert – the amazing AI Wingman – were to drop some LGB’s on a CCC bunker. Dilbert being AI can’t seem to “attack my target” when it is auto-generated (via script, at least without more scripting). So, I drop. Boom. And I set Dilbert free with a “Engage Ground Targets”.
He immediately sees a small convoy (he’s good at spotting them quickly, I’ll give him that) and, fangs out, he goes for it. Being guns only I decide to support - jets vs guns, what could go wrong.
We blasted the single APC a half-dozen times each, but it kept shooting back (has to be a bug cus while I may miss, Dilbert never does). Being a Bad Flight Lead I keep going and on the 3rd pass Dilber calls, “I’m hit”. Now here’s the interesting, in a good way, part…
Me: “rejoin”
Dilbert: “Unable”
Ok, maybe he’s not faking it. So I orbit overhead and watch him slowly descend. Shadow starts to merge, then the dust trail forms (for like a 1/4 mile at least) as he tries to do a belly landing. No way. But, he did it! Next pass there he is, standing next to his ride (likely waving at me with only one finger?) staring off towards home.
Never seen them do a belly landing. At least not one as skillfully. Cool.
And, they seem to manage fuel a little better (Hornet) - if - you don’t abuse them. At least on departure. Enroute to the first AR (from the Boat SW to AR-Alpha anchor - ~an hour leg) they did better than I with the gas. They dump JP-x out the back with abandon however when attacking. The code makes “Joker” and “Bingo” calls and lets you query them for “Fuel state”.
*********** Skip if you like, not related to the above ************
My personal sanbox scripting. It’s working fairly well (given the limits I have to work with).
Testing on a long mission: think XPlane/FSX/FS2020 with a PMDG-like complex aircraft (DCS Hornet in this case) from, oh, DFW to ATL - but you get to drop bombs on ATL. And do AR enroute). The “NO FLY” part is a, {cough} surly third party doing their own thing; you can’t go in there (the code will nag you if you do!).
Notice “FOB APACHE” - guess what’s going in there? I’m this " | | " close to having the mil-sim/flight that I’ve always wanted.
Near mid-air (“near HIT”) with an auto-generated flight entering the AR track. While all “agencies” (the shapes on the map, minus the No Fly one) will issue you “services” (Visual/Instrument approaches and such) and frequencies, I don’t have separation services. It’s a Big Sky after all.
There were approximately 100+ objects (air/land/sea) used but the code never let it get above 31 objects, keeping the performance under control, all while keeping it interesting.
I may make another video but I find doing them very tedious (the Irony).
Testing takes a lot of time. Guess I’m entering the “Beta” stage of development.
