DCS 2.7 Discussion

Bought it and updating now but it will be tomorrow before I get to try it out.
A huey flight around the Falklands will be first on the to do list followed by something faster over Patagonia

Same.

Anyone having difficulty getting the map. I have tried multiple times via the module manager and the game shuts but no download starting

I’ve been flying around the South Atlantic for a few hours now. The variation of the terrain in this region makes for some really interesting flights. It has it all… deserts, forests, glaciers.

The terrain textures look great in some areas and pretty bad in others. I feel like the color is over saturated and the terrain noise isn’t very good. I’ve tweaked these myself for now. The textures also benefit from some sharpening. Unsurprisingly I ran into some bugs. At Rio Gallegos if you spawn your aircraft anywhere other then the runway it results in spawning mid-air and tumbling out of the sky. Not sure how this one made it through testing but oh well.

I thought performance would be better than it is. Over the sparsely populated towns I still get a pretty good fps hit. Heavily forested areas also drag down performance some. This is common on other maps such as Syria where the cities are much more dense so I thought we’d get better performance here. I’m sure the developers will improve this over time just like Syria did.

I feel like it’s a tad over-priced for the state that its in. Personally I don’t mind EA and supporting the developers. I know Razbam will improve this product over the next year or so. I think the map has huge potential and will be fun to watch it get developed further. I’ve already found a couple airstrips not on the map. I’m sure there’s more out there… its such a huge map. One of my favorite things are the coastlines and the new wave animations. They look amazing, especially around the Falklands Islands.

Looking forward to hearing others opinions of it!

Just a quick first flight. Yeah it needs work. Of course it does. They always do. Remember how awful performance on Syria and Marianas was on release? This one isn’t half bad compared to those…

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Almost ready to hit the “Pay Now” button.

How do u edit the terrain noise? I’ve done this [way] in the past but haven’t messed with it since (some lua file(s) if I recall, and I did it for the NTTR). I’ve always thought the noise texture could use well, more noise, for low-level flight.

I used Mustang’s noise textures for the PG map from this post:

It worked great to get rid of the ugly noise texture tiling. The south atlantic uses different noise texture zips instead of “noises.zip”. I just replaced the near and far noise texture files with the ones from the mod and load it using OVGME. Next I’m going to mess with the terrainoptions41.lua file to see if I can turn down the noise level a bit as I think its over done. I highly recommend sharpening with reshade also.

Awesome, thanks! Sounds like what I did several years ago. Will check it out again. I assumed it wouldn’t work anymore.

I think I have notes on this file buried somewhere. My new GPU might be able to handling this again (the old 1080 8GB card took a hit from using the mod). Thanks again.

but regarding myself, I am not investing into SA map, for now. looks very good but…

I stopped playing DCS few months ago. Wasnt happy with performance in Paradise Lost campaign on Marianas plus I am flying enough sims already - XP11 for helo ops, MSFS for fixed wings.

and now added high speed low level siming in Assetto Corsa ( its all your fault @chipwich  )

I still cant get the download to start. Its a real pita having to start the sim, wait till it goes through its checks and launches then press instal on the SA map only for it to not do anything. Suggestions welcomed :hugs:

It hooked the download after 10’s of attempts
Cheers

from CMD Prompt:

DCS_Updater.exe install FALKLANDS_terrain

I flew the viper for 15 minutes yesterday. Very early impressions. But I have to give it to ED. They implemented the first version of the digital FCS, and holy moly it does feel more “digital”. That by itself amazes me, how can they convey that into a 2D (in my case) PC sim is astonishing.

Takeoff/landing transition is very noticeable (and improved). Roll rate is a lot faster, will take a while to get used to. Trimming seems a little better for me (including annoying roll trim) and the trimmer/FCS behavior has a different curve that makes it’s corrections slightly more electronic (reminds me a little of the Hornet in that regard).

It might be all in my head, but I found the changes to be very major in general handling of the aircraft.

A few thoughts after a brief Huey flight between Stanley and San Carlos. Worth noting only one tarmac road in the Falklands which is between Stanley and Mount Pleasant military base. The latter two points also have tarmac. Everywhere else is dirt track and fords, not bridges. Few telephone poles - they use radio in the settlements. The bridges are not red brick as is often the case in the module. Houses are not made of bricks. Nice discolouring of the ‘diddly dee’ bushes (background terrain most places) to reflect where the peat diggings are. Too many houses everywhere. Traffic. Yellow double decker buses? There are no double deckers. Articulated HGVs and cars travelling along a road that might get a 4x4 once or twice a week.
