Works well, so far… No crashes in three attempts.
Will still try to analyze that dump, you were talking about.
Is Tacan receiving to pick up a tanker broken?
We analyzed the DCS Crash File already and determined it was the no MSAA Return bug / error.
There’s a Shader string that calls depthBuffer.getMSAA() == msaa, that triggers the crash,
ED’s aware.
I see! Thanks for looking into it and helping out!
BTW, this bug just affects the MT exe? I haven’t had problems with the ST exe.
This.
IIRC Yes
I know that - but this can mess things up as well, and not quite as risk free as it would appear. It can also require other actions, dependent on what has been changed (i.e. controls, shaders, whatever).
I made a decision not to do the switching after I saw posts by people who were doing it, complaining of poor VR performance. Sticking with stable is safe in that respect and the only reason for me to go with OB would be to fly online and as I’m not in any squadron/group I won’t be doing that (I can use stable servers if the mood takes me, though they are obviously not always running ideal scenarios, that’s how it goes).
The online thing is why I think the OB/stable thing is a poor state of affairs. imho there should be a limited number of special OB servers for the testing thing and the standard for online playing should be stable.
Lets face it, most people seem to use OB because they have no patience for new things, not because they want to help iron out bugs, which would be the secondary motive, if at all. Whether they would admit it is another thing, but it’s very obvious from what can be read on the ED forums.
If you fly pancake, beta seems to run just fine. I can’t recall the last time I had a crash.
I guess I am a bit of both. I do like to play with new, shiny toys. And, when encountering bugs I try to help out. But, I have also sat down for one of those rare occasions when I can set a couple of hours aside for some simming, starting DCS and turning down the option to update to the next beta, precisely because I don’t want any nasty surprises and having to spend my playtime on having to revert to the older build… So I totally get your concern, @Johnny. A lot of DCS users would be much happier with the sim, if they did what you do. It’s what I always tell people complaining about new cool aircraft modules being released into early access; If you’re expecting a finished product, don’t buy one that says ”Not finished”.
That said, the stable release is normally just the previous open beta. The big dealbreaking bugs mostly appear when big changes, like multi threading, is introduced. And frankly, multithreading is actually a beta, within the beta. So I can blame nobody but myself, for dealing with bugs
MT is essential to the survival of the Sim platform.
Oh I was not implying otherwise! It’s a great improvement and I’m sure it will become even better. But there are bugs, naturally.
Can’t say I’ve ever used ‘stable’. I mean like, ever.
IMHO ‘beta’ is, or has become, the de-facto standard version. Something this complex I expect issues and feel ED has a pretty good handle on it. Diving head-first into the world of writing code has adjusted my attitude in this regard [1].
My issues are more towards missing features (my priorities don’t always align with theirs, but so be it), something not addressed in either version.
[1] Example: I’m editing the MIZ file offline in an external app and one single step (in a LONG list of steps) of just updating the radios is driving me slightly crazy; works for the Hornet but not for the Harrier even though the table entries are of the same format. So many moving parts…
I had to switch back to ST…I was getting too many micro stutters flying low over terrain…very noticeable in New Normandy and Syria.
This looks awesome. I think the I-16 is neat but wish it had some more appropriate competition in DCS.
If anyone still has Normandy w/o Normandy 2 in Open Beta (Low Quality), let me know,
I want to check on overall file size vs Normandy 2 High Quality.
I didn’t do it before upgrading, and I can’t revert, lol.
OK, those specs match my HQ Folder…
Ah, my bad - I just realized the DCS updater did my old Normandy to HQ. Sorry!
