I did a recurrent with a sim partner that was a Vigilante pilot during/after the Vietnam war. Managed to stay in the reserves and in the cockpit until they finally retired them. Pretty cool airplane with an insane mission, and would be insane to land on the carrier. IIRC largest supersonic jet to ever operate off of them.
He was surprised I knew what they were when he said RA-5C, and I replied “The Vigilante?!”
I remember watching a pretty decent longform video about the Vigilante, especially the RA-5Cs mission on youtube a couple of years ago. Crazy to think that they operated them from carriers and as you say their mission was insane.
They had a Tomcat sound upgrade, but I think they took it down due to its installation complexity and the chance of breaking IC for multiplayer.
I’ve been using the Hornet, Viper, Spitfire and Mustang sound mods since their release without issue. Easy to install. Periodic updates. It’s cool hopping on a server, canopy open and listening to your teammates depart in full burner and fly by.
The Spit flyby did sound good although it was a bit far away for sounding so direct. The cockpit footage was a bit weird, between 1500-2000RPM they chose a sample that contains primarily prop noise, nothing you would hear inside the pit.
Ever since ED updated their warbird sounds a couple of years ago I have never found a sound mod that didn’t have an issue that put me off somehow. The Echo 19 stuff is good but especially the sounds inside the cockpit are not up to the standard ED offers and lacking consistency, the Spitfire footage is a prime example of that.
Since I spend 99% of my time in DCS inside the cockpit the sounds have to be sublime and since ED has set a very high bar with the warbirds and the F-16C and F/A-18C for that matter it’s going to be really hard for a modder to beat that (my opinion, feel free to disagree).
In the beginning of DCS World there were sound mods I used and enjoyed which were imho better than EDs sounds but those times have long passed.
Agree. I appreciate the work it takes (an understatement it feels like at the moment) but these mods just aren’t worth the time to install (and keep up to date) - for me. Now, if I was a YTube content creator, that relied on a lot of cinematic external scenes - different story. Or flew in 3RD-person mode all the time.
The stock interior sounds are appealing to me as is, from the 'thunk, thunk, thunk…" of the Strike Eagle RADAR (nice) to the odd one I just heard inside the Viggen…thought my wife was watching some European crime drama in the next room at first; a distance, faint, slow siren sound. Stopped when I took my headset off
But, I dig that they are putting the work into making a sim that has a lot of holes in it, better.
Honestly can’t live without the Spitfire sound mod, even just in the cockpit. The default sounds—for the Mosquito as well—are lacking in that deep, visceral feeling you get from hearing them in real life. Particularly on startup.
