In my struggle to get achieve the holy grain of clarity and performance out of the Quest 3 I’ve tried a bunch of stuff, both placebo and beneficial. This video was quite helpful.

TL;DW: OpenXR and Open Composite we already know about. Using the OculusTrayTool or OculusDebugTool to narrow vertical and horizontal FOV was big. Yes, it is distracting at first. Fortunately it is bad mostly in 2D. In 3D my eyes quickly adjusted. He recommended .65 x .65. That was a bit much. I settled on .80 x .80. Dropping upscaling was a no brainer. I didn’t need a video to suggest it. The blurring and ghosting was too much. His settings gave me the bandwidth to use MSAA at x4 and anisotropic filtering at x16 and still get at least 1/3 better frames with FAR better instrument and HUD clarity. He recommended using OpenXR in ā€œTurboā€ mode. That is an experimental feature that CTD’d DCS every time. If you try it and get it to work please let me know. Even without it I am getting the best results yet since 2.9 dropped.

Although the video seems focused primarily on the Quest, Pimax and Pico settings are also mentioned.

Nice update for the Viggen. I wonder if they will also make the EP-13 sight collimated again. At the initial release it was, but the implemnetation was buggy in VR (z-axis inverted, leaning in would move the picture away, leaning out would move the picture closer). At some point they just made the sight a regular fixed display.

Yeah, that would be cool. But as you say, it didn’t work very well the last time…

Mirrors are still bugged like this in VR, I guess this means it’s a DCS problem in general, not specific to the Viggen.

I don’t know, the FLIR image projected to the HUD in the Harrier and Strike Eagle is also a collimated display (altough transparent). So this seems to be possible in principle.

I was just trundling around the new Normandy map in a Sherman, and the trees seem to be destructible … if you drive into them, don’t know how long this has been a thing or if it like that on other maps

finally, some love for us lower class simmers… lol… new update updates textures for Flaming Cliffs 3… I would love to learn the Apache, F16 or F15, but I’m just too busy for study sims in my retirement days. But still love to play a mission or 2 with the lower fidelity aircraft.

Yay ECM pod for TARPS missions!

F yeah! I love driving the FC3 birds, they are fun machines all.

FWIW, in certain circumstances I find them harder than some of the full fat modules because of the HOTAS requirements. There’s no label hunting or menu surfing in these machines. You need to know what button to press in an fc3 bird.

Ah, so it’s ver 2.9.3 now.
My update is 79GB down unpacked to 165GB. Definitely the largest update I’ve ever had, guess it just covers a large number of modules because it’s not 3.0 yet which I would have expected to be big.

They also refactored terrain. I can’t wait to experience the result. Should be jummy frames…

Does it rename your game and Saved Games folder to drop the .openbeta extension? Or do we need to manage that on our own?

Edit: It does not.

And the AlphaHog will always be closer to this ol’ simmers heart, than the CharlieHog.

What’s the Snurk button. We’ve been flying the Viggen during the past few and I have no idea :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I couldn’t feel a noticeable change, but TBH, haven’t flown it in a while. One thing that it did do for me is kill the control input modifier that I use (Hornet pinkie lever BTN_4), which I use extensively as a shift function. Not just for the Hornet, but every frickin’ aircraft. It’s going to be a pain to add those all again.

My FPS went up for sure. I run a Quest 3 via a RTX 4080S and with the DCS High preset getting a solid 72 fps on the PG map, even over populated areas. If I’m rooftop level it bounces around 65-72, but with any altitude it’s locked in at 72.

I must be living under a rock. Since when did the Hornet’s kneeboard display the custom pop-up kneeboard pages? Pretty cool and no need for the OpenKB in the Hornet. ← I may not have noticed this because I usually fly with the pilot turned off.

I found the ground handling of the f18 a lot better … easier to keep in a straight line, without the overcorrections is used to have, and not so much of a jarring when you forget to disengage the auto pilot and do a hard turn. I also found VR to be smoother, a noticeable improvement.
