I’m not seeing a Course selection knob or switch, so right now it does seem that the only way to center it is with a fresh Direct To . I’m sure this will get fleshed out, but right now we are still able to navigate to a specified point or build a flight plan, so at least there is that.
I just flew a fun sortie on the Afghanistan Through the Inferno server. I was heading to one of the special mission locations as there is usually a CASEVAC element to those missions. Half way there I took a look at the F10 map only to see another CH47 on the way to the same spot and much closer. A few moments later a “Request for CASEVAC” came in for a pickup about 70nm away, so I went there instead. About 5 minutes out an Apache pulled up on my right side. He followed me in, flew top cover while I picked up the casualty and then escorted me to the nearest airfield.
I’m having those thoughts too. A few times in the last year or so, rightly or wrongly, I think to myself that this is a platform for making really cool looking cinematics, that peers over the fence to catch a glance at the War Thunder world.
Still don’t recall who said it here first, been a few years now, but DCS is ‘X-Plane with bombs’ (I’m paraphrasing).
All that to say I will stay in it for now, just not going to spend much more money for a while (Iraq map - full map - I would be tempted). My ‘support the platform’ account, while not in the red, has seen significant drafts against it and needs an influx of currency…think I’m tired…
So I just flew the Chinook for the first time to get my keys bound and update the list of paid modules with in-cockpit pilots that I maintain on the DCS forums…
It’s rough
No force trim (on a FFB joystick this really stands out), flight model feels heavy and disconnected (maybe realistic… but I need some feel to know what the chopper is doing), limited avionics and no pilot or crew models visible from inside the chopper. The flight model really feels like the freeware UH-60 - a flight model I really don’t get along with. But maybe it’s realistic and I’m just not whatever you’d call the helicopter version of a truck driver?
Wasn’t helped by DCS forgetting my “override IPD” setting, so everything seemed smaller than I was expecting until I twigged onto that!
That said, I like that there are a bunch of crew positions modelled (but why can’t I click on the ramp controls?! Ah yes, “to be completed”), and the interior and exterior models are great. But I’m not recommending this module until a lot more work is done on it!
100% agreement. The Harrier is a great example. I got it to fly VTOL, the fact the INS didn’t work, the intervalometer didn’t work, and the systems modeling wasn’t quite right didn’t matter. I wanted to take off and land vertically while dropping iron bombs, and was willing to pay $60 to be able to do that from day 1. The rest of it was just gravy, and I was easily into the cents per hour territory with how much I flew it before even the first major update.
Sure EA releases like the F-4 are the desired outcome, but it’s called early access for a reason.
I’m in the @PaulRix and @jenrick “Look, me flying a Chinook!” corner in this debate. My ability and free time needed to absorb a massively complex module roughly fit on an early release delivery schedule.
But I really appreciate you critics, because without you, the things would probably never get close to being completed.
It seems like the Chinook is also one of Wags’ pet projects, so that bodes well for its development.
It works for non FFB, unless I dreamed that. Force trim is called “Trim control” and “Trimmer reset” in the DCS controls configuration.

My girlfriend is a typical researcher. Whenever I say that, she always replies: “Are you taking the hardware costs into account?”
She still encourages me to buy new hardware and modules though. But she’s very strict about fair estimates!

On the one hand, this means I can just remove maps and install them quickly if needed, instead of buying a bigger SSD.
On the other, I could buy a 4TB SSD every year instead of paying for this internet speed.
