At one point in my career I got to play with sequencing problems on final (ILS, Visual’s etc) for Rucker UH-1’s., mixed in with F-15’s (and other pointy-nosed jets). PAR’s took FOREVER! (FWIW, F-105’s were the hardest - fast and couldn’t turn for squat compared to Eagles, Talon’s etc).
Took a bit of practice to get the timing right; holding the chopper(s)[1] abeam the FAF then shooting them in there behind the jets, playing with the spacing of the F-15 coming up behind them.
[1] When Rucker found out we could do all this, well, it could get a lil crazy. But! you could put two UH-1’s on final (3 or more of them actually, in your lil mini-RADAR pattern. All daytime, VFR, practice of course.
I absolutely love flying the Kiowa …and have the same thoughts …”did I become a better chopper flying or is this too easy” …it feels to me how you see helicopters flying in tv shows, it’s controllable, easy to take off, easy to land and ridiculously easy to hover
Even the systems make sense, navigation systems are straightforward, weapons are again straightforward
The kiowa is a version of a chopper that’s been used as a trainer for ages. It should be a sweet flier, though perhaps it isn’t quite heavy enough in DCS. In Afghanistan, carrying the eye of sauron a full tank and some pew pew it should struggle to get off the ground.
With the SCAS on it flies about like I’d hope a scout helo developed and updated by the biggest defense establishment on the planet flies. It’s smooth, controllable, and does what you want it to. Pay attention to your sink rate and torque and you’ll be fine. Turn off the SCAS and it will definitely remind you of the Huey.
Half of that is probably because we can’t get temps hot enough with the Mission Editor cap (max 33 in spring, 40 in summer), and the baked-in lapse rate so at Kandahar the hottest you can possibly get it is around 34 or so. With ME set 33, full load of gas, gun, and rockets she takes 95% torque to take off/combat and constantly pings me with temp warnings if I’m doing anything more than crusing.
The Hook without its SCAS/ACS/whateverit’s called is horrid to fly. I frequently forget to set that to BOTH before takeoff
