DCS AH-64D

Don’t know … but there is no option for it to be disabled like in other helicopters

Thank You.Very Kind of You

Yes, cyclic and torque pedal trim mode settings are separate.

Apparently GR arent doing any tutorials anymore for DCS. Lots of drama regarding the apache release.

I really hope Wags and the rest arent being hounded by the grim reaper fans. What a shame

For me, the second paragraph is the crux of the issue with the first. We lack a PROPER reset trim function right now. IRL it seems like holding the up trim button simply releases the magnetic hold, so you have no trim at all, and then when released the magnets simply hold the control at wherever it was left.

This doesn’t work for Central trimmer because you wind up dragging the digital center all over the place. The result is an incredibly awkward feeling dance on the controls as you transition from cross country cruising to approach/hover. This is compounded by Rudder and stick trim being held together.

The way things work in the huey feel more conducive to military helo ops: as I’m looking to transition from cross country to maneuvering state I hit the reset trim button and ‘catch’ the aircraft as its true digital centers return to meet my physical one. Major advantage to this is I get a clean slate to my controls, and that now means that the feedback from my physical controls is ‘true’, so from doing my ‘catch the helo’ move when resetting, I have the stick physically at say 50% forward, that tells me that I’m using half the available travel there.

Really hoping this is something ED just implements with an update, and doesn’t try to fight the community on.

I tuned them out a long time ago; none of this surprises me.

I’m getting along fine with the trimming now, but definitely went through an adjustment period. I think that the main difference between how the Apache works compared to the Huey, Ka52, and UH60L for that matter, is the need to return to center cyclic and pedals. Now it feels more or less natural.

If it changes, I’ll adapt, but not that worried about it. FWIW, I assume that ED is attempting to simulate the real aircraft based on research and plenty of SME input, and not trying to make life unnecessarily difficult.

Is there any way George as CPG will search for targets on his own, without the need of telling him where to look?

Edit: Took a look into Wags video about Crew AI, in video description at the end it says

During the early access period, we will continue to improve and refine it, particularly the automatic sighting and engagement abilities of the CP/G.

So looks like we’ll have to wait. It’s annoying when flying as a pilot getting caught by ZU-23 right in your face…

The Apache trim system is not like the other Helo’s in DCS.

As Open Beta Progresses it should be easier, as more modes and FCS Functions are added.

On the topic of getting George to use the gun. It isn’t the most accurate weapon. Don’t expect Ka-50 2A42 levels of accuracy. But, it’s super flexible by comparison. It’s great for slashing attacks on soft targets.

Same. I could do a pretty detailed series of tutorials on the MiG-21 in DCS. However, I’d not at all be surprised if someone like Dolphin887 got the attention instead.

I can tell you an unhealthy amount of information about the MiG-21. I’ve sat in them, I’ve help restore one even.

But, Dolphin887 didn’t just fly them, he instructed in them. Casmo is a real Apache and Kiowa jockey. Does it make that much of a difference in the sim? I’d honestly argue not really, but there’s a cool factor and legitimacy given by that real world experience that GR just can’t match.

And that’s perfectly fine! I wouldn’t at all begrudge people for preferring videos made by an actual Balalaika rider. I’d probably watch them too. No one should begrudge the community and, by extension, ED for feeling the same way.

I had the same opinion at first but after some hours flying I feel there’s really no need for a trim reset, try to retrim more often ; you won’t need to keep track as much.

Another take on controller setup from Juice at TAWG. He adds a few items not in the Wags video.

Not specific to the Apache, but good tips over all coming from Casmo:

I’ve found the Apache to be a DUMMY stupid easy helicopter to fly. A light touch and relaxed arm is the secret.

I had no idea about that GR drama. Only idly interested at best into what happened, although I have no idea if anyone who does know actually revealed that or if it’s all just speculation.

I managed to get a new PSU overnight from Amazon. Turned out the hard part was actually taking out the old one and putting in the new one. My old Antec Sonata case doesn’t have an access panel for it, so I had to remove the RAM and heatsink/fan from my CPU on the mobo for it to fit through where it could go.

New PSU is Corsair HX850 modular, and it was surprisingly confusing. Plus the cables weren’t very bendy so there was some force involved to make them turn and fit. :frowning:

However, after all that the PC booted right back up as if nothing had happened so the PSU never over-volted/amped anything I can detect which is great news. (Once saw a PC that had been used on a patio overlooking the ocean come in and start BLOWING UP caps … it was putting out 96v on 12v line… salt water and PCs don’t mix, kids)

I’ve only spent about 2 hours with the AH-64 so far and the most surprising thing was taking off and going into instaspin. Going to need to work that torque pedal with more finesse I think! I had even more trouble than my first Ka-50 flight back in 2008!
On the flip side, my first flight in the Hind was ultra smooth. Rolling take off there, however.

So i was supposed to be working days this week, moved everything around and set my week up. Did 1 day yesterday and the customer complained i wasn’t there and the company i subcontract for panicked and shunted me back onto nights.

So my simming time was tragically cut short.

However, I really wanted to do some side by side comparison with the Hind and apache. Not because they have similar missions Etc, i just really like both as machines and thought it would be interesting.

I started in the Hind. Taxi, hover, and transition is MUCH easier in the apache (it pains me, because i wasnt expecting this with the many more hours i have in the 24)

Level flight, general handling, high and low speed manoeuvres. The hind wins. Its faster, more stable, the trim is almost perfect and its extra weight means it accelerates straighter and is much easier to slow down from high to low speed (120 kts - 40 kts)

Transition to hover, landing and high level hover decent. APACHE.

its a weird one the apache. Its very very nice to fly. Like a very sedated Gazelle. But it doesnt suffer from the onset of VRS like the Russian birds. But when you DO hit it, ive not managed a recovery yet. It seems to loose lift on the downwind side and tip you over (maybe just me) and slip you sideways into the ground.

Also, if you fly them back to back, remember the landing gear in the hind  scrape…
