DCS: F-14 Development Update - Enter the -A!

You have to do the same with the F-14B_RIO.
Apparently from now on all the F-14 variants will share the same keybinds file

I donā€™t have to since I never set up my RIO bindingsā€¦
dodged

Dangit! Im supposed to be learning the VIPER! Too much choice, too much :upside_down_face: :star_struck:

We all need to re visit our ā€œmax altitudeā€ thread we did a while back. Should be interesting with the high altitude thrust advantage the A model has.

Calling our winner @Franze to perform the test. Ill try it after work as well

@Troll SimShaker For Aviators Beta has been updated to include the F14-A today. When you run it it should prompt for d/l page. This is the beat. Just d/lā€™d, havenā€™t tried it yet though

Ok, it works. Ahhhā€¦the -A is talking to me now!

I have to say, coming from the B the A is kicking my ass behind the boat. No crashes or ramp strikes, but Iā€™m boltering or coming in high to wave off all the time. The combination of lag between throttle changes and engine response, plus the lag between power changes and the airframe actually doing something makes it really hard to handle.

Iā€™m glad to hear that something is different. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing.

Compressor stalls will F you up in a dogfight. This machine just got a whole lot more macho, because the skill floor got upped. It is slightly lighter, and thatā€™s something you feel as well, meaning thereā€™s not just downsides to flying the A compared to the B. I love it.

To be honest, I havent encountered many compressor stalls in the -A. Two if I remember correctly which where quite easy to recover from.

Theres something wrong with thrust and/or drag at the moment. When you descent you will accelerate with idle throttle. In general the -A is astonishingly fuel efficient. Just watch those fuel flow gauges and the time you can spend in stage 5 afterburner.

In contrast to that, itā€™s very hard to go super sonic. We had some issues yesterday to run from Su-30 Flankers at altitude. This makes BVR very difficult.

Case 1 recovery is a challenge. It still feels more natural to me than the fly by wire Bug.

It takes a lot of enery to punch through transsonic drag. try diving through it. As youā€™re supersonic, the machine should more easily pick up speed. Itā€™s an interceptor meant to go fast after all.

I buzzed around a few times in case 1 at the weekend and found it slightly easier to trap. However I had been building it up a little in my head and was probably way ahead of the aircraft due to overthinking it.
I really like it. It feels much more powerful (placebo again?) Up high.

I really need a few straight hours to play properly and have a serious stab at refueling

This is definitely the right advice. Or be high. Higher the better

Trans-sonic drag is an issue acknowledged by HB though. It is almost impossible to get the F-14A through Mach 1.1 without operationally impractical maneuvers.

Huh, same here. Thought it was just me. I kinda found the -B to be the easiest behind the boat (than the -18), minus my tendency for ā€˜awkwardā€™ coordinated turns at times.

Same with AR: the -B (compared to most other probed acft) was a piece-o-cake for me (I do it a lot though). In the -A Iā€™ve revisited those days of cursing at the drogue. Think I need to look at my stick curves again now that I mention it. Seems twitchy in that aspect, though Iā€™ve not flown the -B since the -A came outā€¦

We need to organise a fight club night and maybe do some comparisons.
Side by side acceleration is one at different heights is something Iā€™m interested in.

Iā€™m game, friday night? My place?

I should be free. Iā€™ll give you a firm yay or nay towards the end of the week

Iā€™ve been using the DLC and dumping the extra lift at the ramp.
