DCS: F-4E Phantom Phorever!

Ok, I have to ask this. Is the meme supposed to show the same women just in a new dress and is this the actual joke? I was never sure about that…

Honestly, I never thought that deeply about it.

There is a website for everything. Seem to be two different models from a photo stock.

It’s harder to see on the out of focus shot.

The moral of the meme is two equally hot girls but guys always distracted by something New.

See, the girlfriend became enlightened and now they are a happy modern couple, err threesome. If anyone is offended by this, we can’t be friends. And you obviously would not like flying a Phantom.

All three were models/ actors for a series of stock photos, in Spain if I remember right.

They did a reunion of that first photo about ten years later:

Wow, as some just said [here] - there really IS a website for everything!

Going by this analogy I am an absolute playboy in DCS. Too bad that skillset doesn’t transfer over.

IIRC, the woman is the same woman, it was a staged dual shot and merged into a single frame.

or that was the original story circulating.

Although it’s hard to see, the Hornet is a direct descendant of the Tiger/Talon.
I have that old massive book on “modern warplanes” that came out late 80s. While it naturally can’t tell you about the planes’ later careers, the development info is very in depth and better than many later books.
It showed the intermediate designs starting with an almost identical F-5 leading to the eventual YF-17.

I never knew this!!! But i can see the lightweight, small engine combo… Makes Sense!

I’ll blow your mind once more in regards to the hornet.

The super hornet took elements from the YF-17 design that were removed in the 70s for the legacy hornet because they were unstable with traditional flight control systems of the era.

After a fruitless search online, I just pulled out the book and took a pic with my phone.

And then there’s this:

And… No Cardboard boxes were hurt during its development cycle?

No hurry exists for the DCS deployment of the F-4E. Its most prolific and dangerous adversary is still at large. While the '19 was deployed in small numbers, it still poses a threat and will make a worthy adversary. Pitting the F-4E vs the Fishbed is worthy of an 80s on encounter where the Bis is at the end of its development.
The true nemesis and pain in the rear of the Phantom was the MiG-17. Its a '15 on Steroids. An aircraft so fast, manuverable and deadly that it changed US doctrine in Air Combat. It lacks the top end of the big jet but get in a “mano a mano” with the Phantom and it is a contest of skill. In this WVR arena the Fresco challenges the almighty Phantom.
Something DCS missed the boat on was scaling. Had DCS started by offering the Mustang, then moving us up to the Sabre then the F-5, things would be different. But having flown the Eagle C and E models can we really go to the Phantom and say “WOW”? I beleive a steep learning curve awaits us all.
Much like the forgotten DCS Corsair, the Phantom, lacks the true opponent It needs. (calliing you out, Corsair)
The Phantom came in with its sophisticated weapon system and speedy engines as the aggressor. But the “humble” MiG Fresco was the rough and tumble opponent. It was tough like a tractor and nimble as Hockey player. It had tough hitting cannons. Often an Aim-9 would not bring it down and let’s not even talk about missile reliability in the Vietnam conflict. Just getting a near miss was an achivement in of itself. WVR favors the Fresco from Israel to Hanoi.
I have a great deal of time in the '104 mod fighting the Reds. The '19 is the “easiest” to fight. It has limited thrust and stalls out quickly. The little MiG (15) has a wicked turn radius. Its often avoiding missiles and gunfire like this. Only putting distance or charging in can ensure a kill. Its the second toughest. Of course the Fishbed is a total PITA. It is well matched with a better manuverability. These fights either end with me in flames or frustrated and out of ammo. Its a darn good opponent.
All this leaves me head scratching as to where the Fresco will belong. How will it fair? How much will we enjoy or despise its DCS presence. It is my beleif that it will be the I-16 of the modern era. Simple, unsofisticated, underestimated yet deadly.
I sincerely hope this will be a scenario I will be able to play out in 2025 as 2024’s February comes to the end of its last days with no Phantom in sight. Oh Phantom, where art thou?

Interesting. I had the opposite thought play-testing something the other day, in the Mud Hen, like, “Man, too complicated to do stuff, can’t wail til the complicated part is just flying it and not expending ordnance”.

Though I have no real life clue, the Phantom (after I get it fired up anyway) seems more like: stick, rudder, and don’t stall out. It’s an F-5 dropping bombs (but again, not sure what weapons are modeled yet); easy to expend them, hard to be accurate.

I’m comparing with recent flights in the F-5 vs F-15E. Now, I really - REALLY - need to pick a jet and learn it (other than the Hornet), and thought the F15-E would be a good one. But then…Phantom! What to do.

If you mean F-4E vs Mig-17 dogfighting, yeah, can’t fly it BFM like the Hornet/Viper etc. That will take some adjustment.

In regards to the F-15E, like with the A-10C, there’s one thing I recommend to every player who wants to dedicate some time to it and get some quick results, and that’s learning the HOTAS logic. If you do that everything will fall into place. I love the HOTAS on the A-10C, it’s amazing, and the F-15E and F-16C, unlike the F/A-18C, also feature very decent HOTAS systems.

Even though the F-15E has some really advanced systems, most of them can be easily controlled by the HOTAS.

Now of course it will take some time and studying to get proficient but it’s not as complicated as it might seem at first. Start slow, first learn to take off, land, navigate. Then take time to learn about the armament page and the ins and outs of the radar. You can start either with the AG or AA radar but given how the F-15E is designed to drop bombs maybe start with the AG radar. It’s fairly simple to operate and an incredibly powerful tool. Concentrate on dumb bombs and LGBs first, then move on to JDAMs.

The AA radar is quite a bit more involved in regards to its different radar modes and the corresponding HOTAS controls so maybe leave that as the last step unless you’re really into BVR. The Strike Eagle is hands down the most capable BVR fighter in DCS. It’s truly incredible.

I never EVER have as much fun in DCS as i do in the Sabre, mig 19 and tomcat with only sparrows and sidewinders loaded.

Simple i am. Simple i need
