DCS: F-4E Phantom Phorever!

I found this tutorial quite useful:

But I agree with Derby. It’s not very effective. Since peppering the radar dish with shrapnel does not work only hard kills really disable the SAM site.

A Shrike is no HARM. On a well populated server like Foothold you might have too many emitters that confuse the missile when lofting.

It works ok in close in Direct mode when you can ingress in cover and pop up (and dive again into cover) in less time than the aquisition time of the SAM site. In that regard it’s less finicky than trying to get a Maverick lock

I honestly caution against this video. It does prescribe a singular methodology to the employment of the Shrike and the Shrike’s limitations can only further narrow it’s effectiveness.

Disregard neither seeker type and apply them as your mission dictates. The rule of thumb I work by is by just asking “Where is the threat?”

If I can answer that, I’m taking loft profiles. If I can’t, I’m taking direct. You’re leading a tired old horse to water, basically.

The best system to practice on to understand how the Shrike works is probably the SA-8 Osa. Without an IADS script, you’ll better grasp Shrike basics. Without the IADS script, the Osa will launch after you’ve come into Shrike range. Once you understand how to launch in loft mode (~20nmi out), you’ll be able swat them with ease. The launch warning can even serve as a launch cue for yourself.

With an IADS script enabled, you’ll start to pick up on how to utilize direct in a defensive manner.

I ultimately gave up on missiles in the Phantom and stick with old school pop-ups from within their min engage zone and dumping Mk82s on them

I love that video! So earnest. On his second launch where he was trying to demonstrate what “AF” was doing incorrectly, he himself was unable to employ bad technique. He paused at the donuts and both missiles tracked. I learned exactly what I was doing wrong as I too kept pulling and never had success. Like @Clutch says, maybe not the best choice even with the proper technique. That little Sparrow warhead is like spitballing a blackboard (for those old enough to know what either of those things are).

Yeah, that’s a good one. Listened to it on my walk today. Looking forward to the rest. Sunshine brings legitimacy to whatever aircraft’s systems are being discussed. His creds are amazing.

I seem to remember that someone posted a table with typical tanker speeds for the F-4 a while ago but I can’t find it. I remember tankers would go pretty fast (M0.75 and above iirc). Maybe it was you @chipwich ?

Haha. Busy morning. Thought that you meant BFM speed  Let me have another cup and get back to you.

315 KIAS is the magic number.

Irrelevant ealier reply…

I’ve got the manual, but too busy to dive in at the moment. But my memory is that keeping the IAS somewhere between 425 and 450 kts works works best. Failing that, go faster, never slower. Also, using the audible AoA warning to get the highest instantaneous turn rate works well. But speed is life. She is the opposite of the Hornet.

i just had a quick look at he pilot customisation. You have to bind some controls for "character " then you have a choice of helmets, gloves, pilot face and with or without sunglasses

Still enjoying this one a lot… I even managed to survive for a few minutes BFM against a mate in a Su-27, trick is one turn max and carry enough speed that you can extend - with the burners on (so no smoke) it is harder to keep track of than you’d think… probably because this group likes the one-circle slow fight

It’s the number one reason people like the Spitfire but think the Anton is the worst WWII fighter in the game when in fact they are fairly evenly matched. It’s just that the Anton requires much more discipline in a fight and doesn’t forgive mistakes. Yes, the Spitfire is a much better fighter in a turn fight but a well flown Anton can win, it will just take a little time to build an advantage because you will have to extend after each pass. 2v2 though the Anton is much stronger than in a 1v1. Speed and altitude are energy and energy is what will safe your butt. Of course missiles will change that equation somewhat when you get to more modern jets but it holds true for even early missiles as long as you can spot the launch in time to react.

one of the reasons the anton does better in a furball is that its roll rate is quicker and crisper than the spit’s. It can and will spoil the spitfires aim and win a scissors due to that alone.

another great factor is his heavier armament. hit it and its fook’d. unlike the paint chipper mg’s on the spit, a slashing attack of an anton is dangerous as fook.

so to say it in boydian terms, it is a fine energy fighter and its roll rate allows it to get inside the spitfires ooda loop because of the quicker execution.

Boyd was wrong. OODA is an acronym for Observe, Over-react, Destroy, Apologise.

Yup, that tracks

Funny you mention that- I was in a call last night leading de-escalation training for something happening here next weekend, and both version of this came up in the discussion.

I think the first time I heard that was from a ‘full bird’ US Army Intel Colonel during a ‘debrief’ when I was in Iraq in 2003.

“All y’all need to remember that OODA is not an acronym for Observe, Over-react, Destroy, Apologise. And I have had it up to here with apologising for y’all”

Colonel Natalie was a Texan and a formidable woman. Wore a pair of pearl handled .45s in theatre and nobody - not even the local 2-Star - was brave enough to tell her that wasn’t ‘regulation’.

That’s really one of its biggest strengths. We often fly out with 4+ Anton’s on the Project Overlord server and most times we don’t take losses while getting away with something like 10+ PvP kills. A pack of well coordinated Anton’s is bloody terrifying
