DCS: F-4E Phantom Phorever!

Sedlo has released a new mini campaign for the Phantom, free to try out:

I downloaded it a few days ago, then BMS 4.38 happened. Sedlo is a quality mission builder, so I expect a very high attention to detail.

With the sale right now, would you recommend the Phantom? The thing that held me off is the fox-1 perfomance. I have a talent for getting 530’s, sparrows and alamo’s of the rail dumb. Is it enjoyable to fly alone as well? And should I get Kola or hold off?

I’m pretty terrible at A2A in anything, but I find A2G quite fun in the Phantom, for what it’s worth.

The Phantom is a must-have. There is a long range boresight mode that improves Sparrow launch to kill ratio considerably. Along with the Reflected campaigns, Sedlo just released missions 1-5 of his free Persian Gulf campaign.

I have maybe 10-20 hours on Kola but several hundred hours in the Phantom. If you like the cold war stuff there is no doubt.

As chip said, boresight is useful. Flood mode is fun too. Then again, it’s part of the appeal of that era, that you actually need BFM skills

Alright I let the mudspike influencers win  I’m sure ORBX won’t go bankrupt without my purchase. I grabbed this historical skin of the phantom nearest to me in a museum (I should really pay a visit…). Currently learning how to start and fly her!

I have not yet learned when “flying brick” turns into just “brick”

The Heatblur F4 is a work of art… actually all their aircraft are.

You got two pretty powerful J79s to prevent that. It’s one of the nicest aircraft to fly in formation and the engines play quite a big role in that. It also makes aerial refueling a breeze, at least in VR where you can simply put the seat up and look over the canopy bow, doesn’t work out of the box in 2D although there are workarounds with camera presets or something. I haven’t looked into it since I am all in on VR.

It’s my favourite module in DCS ever since release even though it’s not my favourite aircraft. I like the Tomcat more, especially the looks and the fact that it’s a navy fighter but as someone who likes moving mud and flying strike missions, DEAD and SEAD it’s hard to argue with 24xMk.82s or flying with 10xMk.20s, a full complement of Sparrows and Sidewinders as well as two bags of gas.

Wild Weaseling

I am LOVING the Heatblur cover of the “Phabulous Phantom”. A work of art is appropriate here.

Can finally devote more time to it as I have my lil campaign thing dishing out something resembling a ‘live’ world, finally, and working through the training campaign is…satisfying. Just getting MK-82’s to hit planet Earth is a challenge.

Jester gets a little bothersome but have a quick ‘zip it for a minute buddy’ script that helps. Got the idea from Mr. Reflected (the values to input). Handy. He is nice to have around though.

As always it begs the question, “why do I need more modules?”.

Now they need to finish the Iraq map and I’m “there man!”. Oh, and a SEA map. See, it never ends

Dive toss is your friend. I seem to recall that Rasimus was very impressed with it in Palace Cobra.

I find the DT quite easy and accurate, to be honest. Roll in on the target, hit the Jester context button for him to grab the ground with the radar, press and hold pickle, when I hear the beep I continue holding the pickle button while easing off the stickb (to lob the bombs) while also adjusting my bank angle to keep the 9-12-3 tick marks at the 9, 12, and 3 on the reticle. In low or zero wind that’s a 5-10m CEP for me.

A may fall asleep tonight with that one playing [in my ear buds]. I’m such a geek…
