DCS F/A-18C

The joys of seeing the plane guard helo flying the Starboard DELTA Pattern for hours on end…I’m getting a little misty here.

This from the man who rarely went above the fourth deck?

Exactly the analogy I have used…you forgot to mention the tiny fishing boats–7 feet long with an onboard and a red light on a poll–that are going across the traffic separation scheme…exciting! :sunglasses:

Back during the Cold War, in the EASTMED you would pick up a “Tattletale”- usually a KRIVAK FFG or KASHIN DDG…they would stay on you just over a mile or so…don’t know what the “war-Peace” status is in this DCS theater but that could be a possibility.

The only way to nail traps consistently is to “fly the numbers” many, many, many times. (I assume you have already downloaded the NATOPS manual for the Hornet C and D versions). Like the real naval aviators, use an airfield and just keep shooting touch-and-goes…we call that “bouncing”. After a certain amount of time away from the boat, a certain number of graded, land based “bounces” are required. Then they have to have a few hook up touch-and-goes on the carrier before they are allowed to trap.

Previously in this string you showed a couple of runways too short for the FA18…but perfect for “bouncing”

Second deck. After all, that’s where the mess decks and RE/RC berthing and lounge were (we hosted the underway poker game every night).

Plus, I made it a point to go up and get fresh air and see sunlight every day - even when I wasn’t a smoker.

Good for you! Most Nukes get a nose-bleed if they go up as high as the 03 level.

My first GQ assignment was Rep Locker 7F Electrician. That was actually a lot of fun, and I made a bunch of connections in other departments as a result.

Plus, the first year I was aboard, we were the only folks working on the ship, so there was lots of late night exploration on the swing and mid shifts. “Behind Enemy Lines” had just come out recently, and we all wanted to see how much of the stuff from the scenes aboard the ship we could find while everything was under construction (spoiler, none).

How is the seating position in VR when it comes to reading the HUD easily? One of the thing I’ve found with the A-10C in VR is it always seems like the seating position isn’t quite right.

I think they have recently adjusted the A10’s default VR head position? I

bind a button to VR view reset. lean in, press it and trelax. repeat as needed.

Ok that’s it…I held off watching vids of the early access all week as I didn’t want to be tempted as I’m REALLY trying to learn the Hog. Well now I’ve watched the vids and have decided the heck with it…both the Hornet and the Persian Gulf maps are purchased. Sigh…

It looks good. I do bump up a bit on approach to the carrier to give a slightly better view…but it probably isn’t necessary…

You guys might see a slowdown on info and videos from me the next few days. Real work beckons and I have to churn out some content for the magazine…so I might not be updating at the pace I have.

Thank goodness. This thread was beginning to feel like a lap dance.

Keeping up foreign relations…out of necessity, I’m going to have to start shooting things.

So mapped the various AA radar selections (GACQ and BST are my faves…air-to-air equivalent of “put the thing on the thing”) and the A2A weapons (AIM-9 and AIM-7) but have only so far shot the AIM-9. The AI is very good at spoofing IR missiles.

One would think picking on the Su-25 is not fair…but I got shot down by one of the buggers…

That’s the one thing about the Hornet that scares me. Coming from learning the Hog, air to air was something I never really worried about having to learn. That’s a whole new ballgame in the Hornet.

Ewwww…

Yeah…I’m an A2G and helo guy…but I was a pretty big fan of Jane’s F-15 and doing the whole fight your way in, drop some bombs, fight your way out…and the tanking…loved the tanking requirements in that sim.
