My Dad teased us kids in the '60s about moving to the Marianas Islands. He was a U.S. Army Air Defense officer and involved with missile testing stratigery, which was being done there. I liked the idea (at 12 yo) of the island life - Dad said it is like 1/2 miles wide by 1-1/2 miles long. Never did get there - but will now!

Your dad scaled it down 1:20 for your childish imagination. Many of my military pilot friends have a low opinion of the place and were surprised that I had loved it as much as I did. I realized many years ago that the truth of the place might be an inversion of a common cliché: “Guam is a great place to live but I wouldn’t want to visit there.”

It is for the B-52s. Kind of a “ski jump” to aid them getting airborne. with heavy payloads.
