Petrovich’s Cousin “Yuri”is gonna need some more time away from the Oil Refinery and strapped to this Gun!! He can’t hit a Thing!!
Also…He complains a lot about my flying….I think he’s trying to weasel his way into the Pilot position and make The Big Ruble’s.
And….He keeps telling me He should be the one flying since he seen Top Gun Maverick 4 more times than I have!!!

Does anyone know a key command to get The CoPilot/Gunner Gun sight to work?
Edit…I was able to get some here

At least petrovich doesn’t try to get out of the plane after the tiniest bit of ground fire hits it, like jester does
That conversation normally goes like
Jester… we’re hit
Me… how bad
Jester… BANG…loud air rushing noise
Me … jester?

It’s nice to finally have voices for petrovich. Hope they continually expand that feature, in both Apache and Hind.

Then shoot down the Kc135 and crash into the sea at mach 2

I have not flown the DCS Hind lately but apparently there are some really nice upgrades to the Petrovich AI which is show-cased here. I’m not sure if this is in the current Beta or coming up Beta but nevertheless, Petrovich AI is improving considerably.

I hopped in the Hip today after a long break, and surprisingly found that driving that old bus is like riding a bike. I threw her around the skies just like old times and she still liked it.
Made me think that I should really put in the time to learn the Hind, which I never did, properly. It really is like a slimmed down Hip, isn’t it. Same buttons in different places.

and a lot more responsive, you don’t have to notify a committee board and then wait for a response before you can start a hard turn

Or run across the living room to flip a breaker

these are valid points!
There’s a satisfaction in knowing how to handle the Hip well, and making it do smooth stuff…but it is still more of a “that was smooth, for a school bus”-kind of smooth

There are aspects to Russia, both her history and her current culture that I loathe. But there is something about the machines that Russia produces that just speak to me. I can come back to them after long breaks and I find that the connection is still there. Maybe the chaos of the cockpits is more feature than bug. The Apache is simple but I can’t shoot anything with it after a break. It’s all screens and dumb logic. The Hind is like your trusty lab splayed out on her tattered rug in front of the fireplace. All she wants is a pat on the belly and a scratch behind the ears. I never forget how to do that.

That’s absolutely right @smokinhole. The chaos is the reason i love them. I have no idea at all when it comes to screens , mfd and all that. But i can tell you most of the time where things are by shutting my eyes in a Russian aircraft.
Take tonight. Couldn’t remember where the nav lights were in the mig 19. @freak suggests on the left hand side of the cockpit, which would make sense on a Russian bird as that is where all the weapons are, the throttle, the parachute and the radar. I remember them being somewhere stupid, front left, right under the jettison buttons, nearly hidden and barely visible. I’ll not forget that again

Okay! 3-4 hours of flying later.
Would not be able to do a cold start unassisted, but that’s okay.
Handling. I am getting the hang of it. Still working out what she does when picking into a hover a bit. She gets light on one main gear before the other, which is to be expected, but i think the tall narrow shape of the helicopter adds a bit of complexity. Fine once in a hover. Predictable in flight when I’m ahead of the aircraft. Doesn’t like to slow down and if I end up in a poorly trimmed state when slowing down and descending too quickly, things get a bit all over the show.
Regarding the trim and yaw pedal micro switch settings - how have you guys set yours up?
I have a standard springs TMWH centre mounted (homemade Monstertech equivalent), no extension, and MFG Crosswinds with standard spring & cam, i.e. spring-centering controls. (I probably should take off the pedals spring for helo stuff)
Clearly that’s not how it works in a real helicopter, but also, except for FFB, you can’t really have it “realistic”, so have to choose your preferred compromise.
It does look like there’s benefits to having the micro switch mapped, effectively a separate heading trim - but I think that basically means needing to map separate buttons both for the micro switch and the pitch/roll trimmer, which also seems a bit cumbersome.
I think I’ll need an evening of just playing with the trimmer settings, heh.

I don’t use magnetic brake trim for rudders in any DCS helicopter. I hate it. For years we were forced to use it on the Ka50 before ED finally gave in and gave us a choice. Regarding FFB for pedals, I personally think that the idea is stupid. There is very little pedal feel in any flying machine I’ve flown, from Pitts to R22 to Agusta to B767. A light centering spring is fine. For magnetic brake (force trim) for cyclic with my non-FFB stick, I’ve used both options. (I forget what they are called “return to center?” and the other one). To me, the options are interchangeable. I don’t see much difference. The great thing about the Hind is that it has both spring trim and force trim. I use force trim for big cyclic stick repositions and the coolie hat to fine tune the trim, especially on landing. The best secret to a smooth lift into a hover is to trim/pause/trim/pause as you slowly raise the collective. When the helicopter is light on the skids, find the cyclic and pedal positions that keep you straight and steady and COMMIT to the last little pull into the hover.

To my memory it seems that most DCS planes and helos have the nav lights on the left side. The Ka-50 might be the exception because that’s the side you enter the pit from, very few controls on left side.
I’ve had more opportunities to read guides and watch videos than actually play…but it is starting to click together a bit.
I think ultimately the Hind is quite a straightforward bird with a bit of practice and especially practice with Mr Petrovich.
I set up a simple ATGM mission today at Akrotiri. Flew as pilot commander and got Petro to get three missiles off before he stopped working. I couldn’t work it out during the mission but a bit of reading afterwards revealed that I most likely had tumbled the gyro by not pressing down short before turning. I’ll try that next time. A fun bird, enjoying it.
