DCS Monitor

This exactly! I had a setup with 3 40" TVs and a touchscreen for instruments. While it was a really immersive setup, it took up most of the room, and was an absolute beast to dismantle and move around.
I sold all the TV’s shortly after I got the CV1.
If space weren’t at a premium, I might have kept it though. Sometimes it’s just nice to not be wearing a headset.

Edit: found a somewhat bad pic, for illustration

Hey guys, I noticed that I get much better performance in DCS with 2D monitor rather than VR.

Until I can afford to sell a kidney and buy a new Nvidia card I was thinking to buy a bigger monitor.
I have now a very good 24" but I really wanted something better.
Is 27" enough of an upgrade, or should I go bigger?
Anything around 40" is already too much for my desk - any hint?

I found these two I like :

I got a 60" Samsung 4K TV. Far cheaper and a huge screen. Best thing i bought before getting the Reverb G2. Looking for the model…

A 60" TV cheaper than a 250€ 32" Monitor?
Wow.

I went with a 32 inch curved widescreen and I’ve been very happy. I understand the argument to go big on a TV but I definitely like what I’ve gone with.

You do want to consider the performance implications of going to a bigger screen, I guess…with my old rig, I could run DCS on my old 24 inch screen well on reasonably high settings.

Once I upgraded to 32 inch widescreen, I found that the framerates dropped a bit and I had to adjust the graphics settings. That ended up bothering me a bit until I upgraded my PC. There was definitely a sweet spot but it was hard to accept the lower graphics settings on the bigger screen.

This was with an i5 4690K / 1080Ti / 32GB slow RAM and mostly caused by a CPU bottleneck, I think, so you may not have the same problem.

I bought a Titan Army screen which uses a Samsung panel that’s failed Samsung’s QA. I looked for dead pixels, that was apparently the thing to do. Didn’t find any. Very happy.

@Bearhedge , thanks for the input!
To me having a bigger monitor is more about the bigger pixels, and slightly improved visuals.
I wouldn’t up my resolution to 4k.
That’s why I’m looking to spend only around 200EUR or something.

The Titan Army screen looks absolutely badonkulous ( a compliment ) but for that price I can basically get a new GFX card so…

Yeah fair enough! I got mine on a Black Friday sale from memory…

I definitely think a bigger 2D screen, even with the same resolution, will help immersion and the experience. I probably would go at least 32 inch if you can. The other thing I got to increase immersion on the 2D was an extending wall mount. I bring the screen a bit closer to my eyes when flying so it fills my FOV more.

Currently use a 32" as every day monitor so sits about 1 arm length away from me. Is 4K native but I run everything at 1440p for several good reasons. Certainly more than big enough for this set up.

Thanks! That’s comforting!

My 2 cents:

With that size in mind, make sure it’s a display that has good angles. So the corners don’t become all funny colored.

Also I recommend 120 or 144 Hz displays with Freesync or Gsync. Makes a great difference! No need for more than that as manufacturers start pushing ridiculous marketing numbers like 240 Hz or 480 Hz or even 1000 Hz.

Consider BenQ as a brand, I think they are underrated. Avoid Samsung panels (not brand, panel. There’s like 3 panel manufacturers) as they tend to compromise on pixel errors too much.

USB-C with charging is a nice feature if you ever plan to attach a laptop (homeoffice?).

Good HDR is still too expensive.

Overly good reaction time is usually achieved by overdriving the panel. It looks crappy, like digital sharpening. You’re a man of pixels and you will notice that, I’m sure.

Thanks mate, I’ll keep that in mind!

Since my oculus started crashing my pc every time i plug it in and the kids ripped off the left headphone () I have been solely using my 55inch TV and track iR and I love it. Its not VR obviously but for the flying I tend to do it works amazingly. Its a pain in the arse during @schurem’s fight club, but when I’m on my own in the hind or just learning systems which I do quite a lot these days, I actually don’t feel I’m missing out to be honest
There is something very cool about having a tablet open next to me and having my soothing checklists to work from.
Now I’ve finally found out you can lock the view as well (I’m an idiot) hitting buttons and being precise in the cockpit is a breeze.

Love it

I’ll put in another good word for benq; I’ve have a 32 inch one for a couple of years now and it’s great. I can’t go much larger than that, was a little iffy about buying it cause my previous was 27 inches but it feels worth it.

That’s nice info everyone! Thanks!

@speck could I please ask the model of yours?

Sure! It’s BL3200-B. Looks like it’s a little older than I realized so not sure what the equivalent in today’s model would be.

Hey many thanks!
No matter how old, it’s a starting point!

I need to confess also that I started to use my 55" in FHD mode instead of 4K. I realized how good it is to run all the sims in 120Hz.

E.g. IL-2 BOX runs for me 180 FPS! in FHD. I know its still 120Hz in the end but man, that smoothness and eyes comfort are addictive.

I just decided to live with the ‘slight’ ugliness of the picture - less resolution means I can push more AA.

4K 120Hz panels are still quite expensive… but I am tempted to try one  … or VR :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
